Ok, im gonna get some more RAM for my comp so that i can play Oblivion on my comp but ive never been able to find out how compatable RAM is.
So first of all, I know that my comp either has PC2700 (333mhz) or PC3200 (400mhz), but im not sure which one it is, so if I buy a PC3200 module and if i have a PC2700 stick already in there then should i be expecting any serious problems?

Hmmm, good question. In general, you really should try to keep everything the same. Open comp. and take memory with you. You may even be able to figure it out ahead of time by googling a few of the product codes on the chip itself.

turn off all your shit and unplug everything, open a side panel, use gloves because static can fry your computer. Depending on how much RAM you have you should see atleast 1 or 2 if not more sticks that are plugged in sideways. Pull one out and check what the writing says

Hm, RAM's nice. I like RAM. Makes everything that much quicker and more consistent.
I replaced the stock Corsair 512 PC2700 [400mhz] with a Kingston 1GB PC2700 [333mhz]. The difference between my buddies PC with a pair of 400mhz 512 sticks to my singular 333mhz gig stick wasn't a great one. His shit was a little quicker, sure. But my computer still had a free slot.
Anyway. On with your dilemma. I was always told to try and keep everything in check; no mixing different RAM types, no chip clocked higher than the other, and no chip larger than the other.
I always sucked at this shit, so you'll have to forgive me if I'm ig'nant this time and don't know what I'm talking about.

it'll say right on the side of the RAM stick, simply pop one out and look at it..

u sound like me,
but neways i got my motherboard from pricewatch a few years back and it supports up to 3.2Ghz and has 3 ram slots (which is weird cause they usually come in pairs) so the #1 slot is broken, and i have the mystery stick of 256mb in slot #2, now i bought a 1 gig stick of ram that was PC2700 but it was cheapo limited compat. RAM and it didn't work ANY way that i tried to mix it. Earlier today I bought a 1 gig stick of PC3200 from Newegg.com and we'll see how that goes on Monday. I'm betting that I'll have to replace the 256mb with the 1gig and sell or toss (meaning give it to my dad for his computer or put it in somone elses) the 256mb chip. I'll be jumping for joy if I can get 1280mb, then i'll have a a bad ass system.
j/k its only 2.4ghz pentium 4 with an agp 8X 256mb GeForce FX5700LE I've got a 40 gig hard drive that i only turn on when i need to backup info or retrieve info cause its so fucking loud. Ive got 2 CD combo drives, one is an every-god-damn-thing in one drive, and the other's a 52x cd-rw, and neither of them work.
my 80 gig hard drive is almost full, so i cant go downloading anymore TV show seasons.
your entire network of technology is insuffient for my enormous computing needs.

get 512 ram stick of 3200
make sure its top named brand like corsair, crucial, elixir , etc...
if its 2700 in your computer you can always downclock it to 333 speed
if you dont know how to do it... its in your bios settings.. not hard actually
