Ok, I've read the FAQ's and searched, time to ask my question. I seem to be following the steps for cloning correctly, but am having limited success. I took 5 clones the first time, and had one survive, and took 9 this last time and only had one survive. I am clipping a growing shoot below the 2nd set of leaves, then putting the cut stalk under water and cut it again at a 45 degree angle. I dip the stalk in a rooting hormone, and put it in a medium (kinda like rockwool, don't remember the brand) where the hole has some more rooting hormone. I then lightly water them and put them under 2 45 watt flourescent grow lights for 22/2. Temperatures are around 78 degrees, and there is moderate to light air circulation. I keep a bowl of water in the chamber to assist with keeping the humidity high as I don't have a dome. Any ideas why my success rate is 2 in 14?

I'm in the process of my first cloning right now ... I have read that some strains are very easy to clone, like my Cinderella99s, but others are very difficult .. ?? .. I had 100% luck, just sticking rooting-powdered stems into straight potting soil , but I was told to use 24 hour lights, and mist them with water every few hours, mine wilted right away, but after a good watering and spray, they popped right back ... 4th day now, and they are doing excellent ... maybe you just have one of the more difficult strains ?? :smokin:

I am growing White Widow. I know the plants themselves have been extremely easy to grow.

and put them under 2 45 watt flourescent grow lights for 22/2.
Are these 45 watts, consumed?
The fluorescent, is it big? Or is it like, "comparable to a 45watt incandescent"?
I would believe that's too much ligth... use a small bulb... or just one of them...
In my super-limited experience, clones need little light... or (IMO) they go crazy using the light to "grow"... instead of growing roots....
When I did my clones, I had a 8watt CFL (consumed 8 watts), about 2 feet away... maybe 3 feet. And it worked... nicely.
Don't take this as gospel, but that's just what my stoner head would tell you...
Try out less light... hmmm....

I'm growing White Widow too dude!
Nice. As you say, I've also found the plants extremely easy to grow... I think. Yeah. Nice
Let us know how it goes please!
(and, for server hard disk space conservation)
gK will ask you for pictures... so... any pics possible?

i'm doing the same as you guys, but right now i'm at 7 days. i have a dome and im using bagseeds. I got 8 clones and all looks healthy i think because none of them are wilting and they look healthy like the ones that grown from the main stem.
can i flower then now to sex them or should i wait untill i see roots to sex them?

I know I've read of one or two guys that cut clones, and place them straight into 12/12...
When I tried it, I had a resounding 100% failure rate.
If I where you, I would baby those clones a little bit more, then sex them... just my thoughts!

why are you sexing clones ? ... I thought that was the point, you take clones from female plants, then all the clones will automatically be females ... did I miss something ? ... I'm a little stoned right now ... :smokin:

by the way, mine are still on 24-hour lights, about 3 days old, since cutting ... when do I change the light schedule ? ... should I run 18/6 to grow them up a bit, or immediately flower on 12/12 ?? ... thanks in advance :smokin:

IMO, i don't think 3 days is long enough. i think you need to wait at least a week.
as for me, i don't know the sex of my mother plant, so i just took some cuttings and try to find what sex it is.

i don't know the sex of my mother plant.
wtf
why have ya got a mother plant that you dont know the sex of
you keep a female mother plant to take cuttings off without having to start from seed everytime ya harvest a crop

the only reason i can think of is if you sex a clone you will definatly know the sex of the plant it came off without flowering it
(handy if you are wanting to keep the big plant as a mother plant )
cheers all :)

Well Jerrodg,
Did I miss something? I didn't see a reference to "WILT PRUF" the plant protector sold at Home Depot or over the web. Yes there are multi cloning techniques which will have different rates of success. Somethings you just have to try to find out. WILT PRUF should increase your clones percentages but you'll have to try it to find out.

lol i typed it wrong. sorry everyone. hahaha. i meant that i don't know the sex of my plant. sorry for misleading. so there for i clone to determine the sex. haha sorry. i wish i could say i was high at that time to get away with it, but no excuse there. lol

I cloned WW under 12/12 with 100% success rate. I use plastic wrap to cover up water filled container, then I punch small holes so that stems can go thru and be 2cm in the water, in 15 days the most you have roots.

and why did you clone under 12/12 lighting regiment?

He said 22/2 which is wierd too. 24 is needed for clones. Also a heating pad or higher temps would help. As well as misting and making sure the medium stays wet. Drying out will kill a unrooted clone quick!
Soaking the cutting in super thrive right before the hormone seems to help too. I've heard WW can be fussy when cloning. But definately possible.

I've always been told that clones do better with 24/7 light.
But a few ppl have told me that the 6 hours of darkness speeds things along. So it's up to you.

he said 12/12 here?
is this a type OOOOO
anything over 18+ hours is good for cloning...

Im with you, i mean, why would you take cuttings, and risk all of them being males... Pre flower a mother, and then you know your growing female clones.... thats the point... thats why its not called father plant.

Im with you, i mean, why would you take cuttings, and risk all of them being males... Pre flower a mother, and then you know your growing female clones.... thats the point... thats why its not called father plant. You should be able to know sex of plants by week 3-4 easy you do not have to change anything.... How is it so Hard lol females have Hairs and the males will grow little balls wich extend out and if you don;t pull him he will dry thoses pods and they crack open and rain down pollen onto females (males grow taller to) Anyone after 1st season would know what to look for and not have to 12/12 pre bud to tell. a clone is not going to grow in 12/12 this causes as we all know budding and when a plant buds root production is stoped or slowed thus makeing it harder for the clone clipping to grow roots. :smokin: + why would you wana be makeing clones off anything thats less than 4 weeks ? Clone need 18/6 up to 24/0 to grow :smokin: hope that helps

I grew 4 big, healthy White Widow plants, and I did not know the sex of them...
So I tried cloning for sex.... until somebody suggest looking for them pre-flowers.
So I did.... and I had a 50% success rate predicting the sex of my plants. So I removed two of them... and kept the two "females".
After I don't know how much time... I took a cruise... and the "watering person" popped the door during nightime... so when I got back, I saw some very interesting male pollen sacks growing ALL OVER my "female".
So I cut the transvestite biatch right out of there... and stayed with my present female.
So, to know sex, you can:
A- clone for sex
B- look for the pre-flowers.
My problem is that my plant's pre-flowers are... TINY. Un-seeable I would say... They're, almost not there. In FACT, they're still a myth to me... never seen them... hmmm... maybe the entire internet is lying... and there's no such thing as "pre-flowers".... ????
Anyways, yeah... you can grow mother plants without knowing their sex... I did... healthy ones, too!
Ok, end of rantings.... carry on! :D
