"(AP) Hundreds of dead dolphins washed up Friday along the shore of a popular tourist destination on Zanzibar's northern coast and scientists ruled out poisoning.

It was not immediately clear what killed the 400 dolphins, whose carcasses were strewn along a 2.5-mile stretch of Nungwi, said Narriman Jidawi, a marine biologist at the Institute of Marine Science in Zanzibar.

But the bottleneck dolphins, which live in deep offshore waters, had empty stomachs, meaning that they could have been disoriented and were swimming for some time to reorient themselves. They did not starve to death and were not poisoned, Jidawi said.

In the United States, experts were investigating the possibility that sonar from U.S. submarines could have been responsible for a similar incident in Marathon, Fla., where 68 deep-water dolphins stranded themselves in March 2005.

A U.S. Navy task force patrols the East Africa coast as part of counterterrorism operations. A Navy official was not immediately available for comment, but the service rarely comments on the location of submarines at sea.

The deaths are a blow to the tourism industry in Zanzibar, where thousands of visitors go to watch and swim with wild dolphins, said Abdulsamad Melhi, owner of Sunset Bungalows, perched atop a small cliff overlooking the beach.

Villagers, fishermen and hotel residents found the carcasses and alerted officials. Mussa Aboud Jumbe, Zanzibar's director of fisheries, went on state radio to warn the public against eating the dolphins' meat, saying the cause of death had not been determined.

But residents who did eat the dolphins' meat early Friday were all doing fine, Jidawi said.

The Indo-Pacific bottlenose, humpback and spinner porpoises, commonly known as dolphins, are the most common species in Zanzibar's coastal waters, with bottlenose and humpback dolphins often found in mixed-species groups."

This is our fault, and will keep getting worse. By next year this type of thing will be a normal occurence for alot of marine species.

ok animals know when natural disasters are about to happen, or they can sense 'major changes' and shit like that.... and last year was a very bad hurricane season, yet that year only 68 did this, this year, it's 400... could this be a pre-warning to an upcoming massivly deadly storm season? hurricane season is like a month away....

The US military has been known to test sonic weapons against dolphins.

There are also numbers of other sonic weapons that they employ...extremely high frequency devices that are broadcasted under water at incredible volumes. These have been known to fck up whales and dolphins.

I remember seeing this in the news, really sad news... the tourism industry in certain countries will certainly take a blow from this, I forget which one was specified

+yea and how much do you, or anyone else here, really try to stop it... no one does what they could to help the enviroment. automobile/assembly line was created, the world was doomed fromt hat point on, we just dind't learn about it til many many many years afterwards (i think it was near the 50's give or take 20 years) when they discovered the catalytic converter, and all that shit, which doesn't completely take away all the harmful exhust fumes, so even ifyou got a newer car, that's completely perfect in everyway, it would still be one of the leading causes of the destruction of our planet....remember earth is on a limited supply of eveyrthing we use in day to day life, and much of it, takes 1000's of years to reform if it would at all... take for instance the water... all this water on earth, and how much is actually drinkable? someday if something else don't get us first, we're going to run out of water, even if it's billions and billions of years from now, it's still on a limited source, it doesn't just magically appear. then there's the ozone holes, which aren't too much trouble now, b ut they will get worse, just as they have every year so far...

in order for us to not going back to hurting our planet and making everything right, we'd have to rebuild the entire world, from the ground up.... and as we all well know, that's not gonna happen
