View Full Version : Emergency! How do I make my plants slow down?

On saturday I'm leaving for 10 days, and unfortuneately my girls are going to have to fend for themselves while I'm gone. :(

I have some clones in a bubbler that started rooting about 2 weeks ago. Right now they're just in a small cardboard box with a 20w CFL. They're growing much faster than I anticipated and streatching too because of the poor light. By the time I get home they might be touching the bulb...

What can I do to slow these bitches down for a few days? Should I trim the roots a little to shock them? Can I leave them in clear water (no nutes) the whole time I'm gone? Anything else I can do to slow down their growth?

if your worried about the light, move the light up slightly, and install a small fan to blow the heat off the bulbs.: that way the plants won't burn if they get to close to the light while your gone. whatever you do, don't cut the roots and try shocking them.

Bend em. Weight them down to the side and have them grow sideways.

no big deal if they touch the light.. they may get burned a little bit...

50% of the time it is better to let you plants get a little burnt from CFL's then to move them further away....

you can clone the clones when you get back!!!!!

yes you can clone clones

put a peice of plexi glass or glass/window between the lights and the plants hat way theyll just smoosh instead of burn.

I'm thinking about going hydro, but I have a limited area for the clone/veg area. Currently, I transplant clones from a Jiffy tray/dome to cups.

My question is: while the mothers are flowering for 6-8 weeks can the clones remain in a DWC cloner? Then, can their tangled root balls be cut to seperate?

I've read differing opinions. I'm kind of inclined to believe that no fatal damage will occure by cutting the root masses away from eachother.

Thanks,

You can cut the roots on any hydro plant back till they just make it to the water level. Not toooo short. They must hang in water. I did this on my first hydro grow to see and it might of slowed the plant NL's by a few days is all. I have a thread where I show it's progress.

I have almost put my plants into hybernation by lighting with flouros and lowering the temps.

Other than the stuff mentioned above, you could move your lights far away and lower the temps as close to freezing as possible without freezing. I've never tried this with growing plants, but I've hybernated cuttings in the refregerator for 8 weeks.

Do you have an old air conditioner around? You can use mine out in the shed.

But he may be willing to put up with a little stretch to slow the plants down. Moving the light up will slow the plants down. I think that was the goal here.

What?! What do you mean by slowing them down? If they are stretching because they dont have any light It will make them unstable and it will not slow them down. I like the smoosh technique though its probably unrealistic... What you need to do is set them in the sun somewhere while youre gone. Preferable in a window or somewhere air conditioned. If not CFLs are usually quite cool and wont burn the plant until it is RIGHT up on it so you should be fine. I'd prefer alittle burnt leaf to a unstable plant that youll have to string up because it stretched so much...

install an ac unit and keep it at 68-72 degrees the cooler temps will slow down photosythesis. Just to let you know.

Earthy Dank:
What I mean is that when you decrease light intensity (such as by moving the lights away from the plants) the plants' rate of growth will slow down. You can almost make them hybernate by pulling the lights way back or having one small bulb. If you do this, they will "stretch". This means there will be more distance between branches on the main stem, and if you let it go clear through flower, not only will you get a small amount of bud, but it will be light and airy and "stretched" apart, instead of heavy and dense. I wasn't suggesting Big Block does this through flower, only slow down the growth rate temporarily.
