ok so if u have a say 400w hps ina closet obviously the temps gonna rise right? well how about a dimming thermostat with an external probe ??? it would turn the lgiht down a notch to keep the room temp at 86?

I don't think you can "throttle" the power output of HIDs.

(*think* is the keyword here)

actually turtle that was my first response also...

BUT.......................

atthe hydroponic convention in SAN FRAN I saw a product that actually did lower the HPS and MH outputs... They were actually designed for big Costco type stores... to help them conserve energy..

As I recall they required a special ballast.. the system was sweet... It all ran through a PC... and you could control the lights at 500 costcos around the country from one little LAP TOP...

You can get dimmers for flos but I never heard of it for MH or HPS. To get rid of the heat you can either create more of an air exchange, put in a lower wattage lamp, or keep the ballasts in a different area and run the wires to the lamps.

Have a good one!

Lower wattage lights do not always mean a signifigant heat reduction..

Fluorescents that are DIMABLE ?
really.. ?

hmmmmmmmm

I have never seen that....
What a shame to dim your own LIGHT..
LOL
love

ah so it obviously wasnt a silly post.....but yeah gknowm thats sorta what i meant like u have bulb-dimmable thermostatss for reptiles maybee theres a same typa thing for hid lights...but would this be good cos it would pretty much solve alot of closet growers problems right?

the heat goes above 86
stat turns light down alittle untill temp is back at 86
then light goes up a little by little untill its at the right brightness that onyl puts out 86in heat???

results : some hps power (step up from fluros)
temps kept under control constantly

wouldnt it be worth it?

yes the word is think.....thats why ive posted it here as a theory ...not a fact. u knwo because im THINKING ABOUT IT .

u think the guy who came up with hps never sat down and thought about it first? the idea didnt just appear in his head u know

Do you know the voltage it takes to light that bulb?

You are better off with an air cooled hood and an air mover to bring fresh cool air in from the outside of your grow area and through the hood and then back again outside the other end of the grow area. That will drop the temp by 10-15 deg at least.

The dimmer switch would put out more heat then the bulb would. Turning down the bulb would drop the lumens and may damage the bulb as well.

Not a good idea at all.

Have any of you tried putting a small fluorescent inside the microwave?

Try it... just for 3-4 seconds... :D

(DISCLAIMER: I don't owe you, nor will I owe you anything... does NOT matter how many buildings burn to the ground beacuse of following my idea)
