PHx percolators

I have been recently looking into purchasing a nice solid piece of glass and for some reason cannot understand how the percolators work. Ive seen the same type of thing in roor bongs but according to Phx their version is pattented...

if anybody could explain or hopefully post a good photo or diagram...
