I to am new to the growing world and I have just planted some seeds and they are starting to pop the surface. My question is why do people kill the males, I know that they will mate with the female and create seeds which I know I don't want but can't you seperate the two sexes and keep them from pollonating each other. Are the male not good for smoking purposes or what I don't understand. Also agian I have just started my seedling, I started with twelve plant and I Notice that five of them started to germinate with in a couple of days and other started in seven thru the tenth day. I heard you guys talking that male grow bigger and faster than female is this a sign that the early sprouts are Males. Thanks for your Help to help me understand.

for once the girls have it all matey.. males, their neither use nor ornament ..unless you actually want to pollinate some of your girls for seeds.

seeds usually sprout at differnt times, all seeds are different....bit like humans really..

as for males growing taller and faster than females....i have read this also..but what if all your plants turn out to be female. im sure they wont all be the same height...one will be the tallest and one will be the shortest. its not really an indication.

you will have to wait till about 2 to 3 weeks after you change the lighting hours before you can start deciding the sex of your plants. make sure you know the difference before it happens..go to www.overgrow.com faq for pics good luck fella

Just my opinion, 2-3 weeks is a bit of a "safe bet"
I'm a first time grower and spotted the males / females about..... 6/7 days after starting flowering.
Probably could of told earlier, but I was searching the lower nodes for signs not the top because I thought lower would grow first.

Yeah, males are pants unless you want to breed, I just hashed some immature males, wasnt nice, waste of time, gonna chuck them from now on.
Seperating the plants still runs the risk of accidental pollination, via touch, clothes, air, etc.
Plus, if you do that, you need to growrooms, twice as much electricity, plus you need more lights, ventilation etc etc etc.
From what I have seen personally, males + females grow at roughly the same rate, however this is my first grow, so maybe it was a one off.
As JGG said too, it's just the way they differ as well.

Thanks guys for the info. I will wait until I start to flower them and sex them and as you guys and girls say on the board here, "I cut the Balls off the Males"
