Sometimes, when a pot outgrows its pot (tee hee) instead of transplanting, which can put the plant into shock and possibly kill it before any useable buds grow, a grower will cut out the bottom of the old pot and set in on new soil. The reason for a smaller pot to start with is that it helps the plant grow faster by keeping the nutrients in a confined space around the roots, instead of spreading all the nutrients for a teenie plant around a huge ass area. My old friend the grower used to do that until he had a pyramid of three sized pots, until our local supermarket started selling peat moss (sp?) pots for easy transplanting. It may be better for the plant, but it's almost impossible the wardrobe grower spacewise.

i have 5 plants at round about that stage and think i might give it a go with a couple of them and do the rest by transplanting and see what happens. did your old friend the grower give favorable comment on this method?..

I used to do that when I was movin them from indoors to outside. Just cut out the bottom and put it in the ground. Worked well

He liked it because he fucked up his first batch when he tried to transplant them, and this way they always survived (save for act of god or drunk).
