What types of materials are harmful to your health when used as bowls?
tin foil, soda cans, etc.

I have often wondered this myself. I would assume that smoking off of aluminum isn't to great for you. Obviously glass pipes are the way to go, but if you can't get your hands on one, use an apple, and then eat the apple afterwards.

lol, tinfoil used to be my piece of choice as a youngin'.
Homemade ghetto gravity bongs are pretty easy to make too. Like, easier than foolin' around with all that foil. And one hit to the head will knock a hata out.

I would never use copper or lead. Glass is the way to go:thumbsup:

I think, Garden Knowm posted a thread on how it's bad to smoke out of cans because of the paint.

if it's a 'soft metal' it's not safe to use... soft metals include (but may not be al): carbon(i think that's a metal), lead, copper, and alumamumum.... that i know of.

I know tin foil is bad for you....so I would assume that aluminium is bad for you....

if u hold a lighter to if for a while and it starts smoking or giving off fumes its bad for u. but dont base everything on that, this is just a simple test.

Brass is safe. They make Brass screens.
Brass is Zinc and Copper. Zinc's M.P. is 419.4°C. Copper's melting point is 1,083°C.

Yeah, my friend once cut out a piece of her window screen when she was desperate for a screen... I've never been so fucked up or ILL in my life after smoking. I wanted to kick her ass!

You were, probably, smoking the skeletal remains of mosquitos.

I doubt that... her house was old, the screen tasted funny, and I literally vomited after smoking. I don't think that's from mosquitos.

before you use screens that aren't 'brand new' you're supposed to burn them for a good 20-30 seconds...

i wonder if there's someone out there that would let you mold a bowl out of shit, let it dry then smoke out of it for the right price.... i've seen some people do some pretty stupid shit just to be on tv/internet... like the other day, there's about 30 thumb tacks laid out in a circle on the floor, then this dude puts his forehead on it, not pushing down on them, then you see this other dude STOMP THE SHIT OUT OF HIS HEAD. all the tacks stuck into his forehead.. then he started pullin 'em out with a fork.

Carbon isn't dangerous. Carbon can take a lot of heat and if it does oxidize it just makes CO2....plus soot is mostly carbon. That said, the only pure carbon you're likely to come across is graphite or diamond. If ur smoking out of a diamond bowl I'm comin to ur house!
Also remember, the only materials you really need to worry about are those that are exposed to significant heat. Like the bowl and stem. So a PVC bong is fine but not a pvc pipe.
Brass is okay.

Why is Aluminum so harmful? I feel I should know this as I've taken a lot of Chemistry and such but haven't ever heard of Aluminum being overly harmful.

Manufactored metals tend to have chemicals on them that will release once burned. I believe there are links to aluminum foil chemicals (when burned) and alzheimer's as well.
Soft metals are just best to stay away from.

what about those c02 cartridges? I've been using them to make homeade pipes and bongs for a while, I'll get one (empty obviously) and cut off the neck with a part of the main chamber for a bowl.
Is this harmful?

I'd think that was brass, maybe. I haven't seen CO2 cartridges since 8th grade, when we built little race cars in Technology class.
