I got into the electrical trade when I was 16, now i'm 20 and 1 semester away from getting my ticket. Needless to say I never knew growing the doja and being a electrician would go hand in hand.
Today I made some phonecalls inquring about lighting and all you should take heed to my word.
Follow these simple steps. (For Canadians. I'm sure Yanks could do the same)
1. Head on over to www.411.ca and search your area for Electrical Wholesale Suplly Retailers
2. Call some places and inquire on how much they charge for ballast kits, the kit should include the capacitor, ignitor and transformer. The socket is a extra 6$ and the bulb is extra as well.
3. Prices I got as follows,
Electrozad
***************************************
400 Watt MH Ballast kit for $64.32
1000 Watt HPS Ballast kit for $108.68
Nedco
***************************************
400 watt MH Ballast kit for $62.45
1000 watt HPS Ballast kit for $145.50
Torbram
***************************************
400 watt MH Ballast kit for $54.00
1000 watt HPS Ballast kit for $140.00
Wesco
***************************************
(Still waiting on them to call me back)
4. Build it yourself. It's not hard at all and all it takes are some marettes (wire nuts), 12AWG wire, Wire strippers, etc. You don't have to worry about getting shocked if nothings plugged in, so don't be scared. Just never work with anything live unless you are a trained professional.
5. Build you're own reflector. I plan on shaping the reflector out of styrofoam or thing gauge sheet metal and covering it with mylar or a other highly reflective substance.
That's it! The cheapest you can get, and some of the best quality too, considering it's comming direct from suppliers, made in NA. Not China.
What's that you say? Bulbs are too expensive?
Not to worry young lass/lad, all you need is a pair of heat resistant gloves and a philips screwdriver. (Star head)
Around many buildings you'll notice many of them have HPS and MH wallpacks. Wallpacks are the lights mounted on the wall outside the building, 50% of the time you'll need a ladder to access it. On the right hand side of the case, most of the time, there are 2 screws, simply undo the 2 and the whole front cover with the glass is hinged and swings wide open like a door. If the bulb was on its gonna be hot so grab your gloves and unscrew that bitch. Free bulbs you say? Yes indeed!
Although, this is highly illegal, nor do I condone any of it. It's all theoretical advice.
I love this board. It's my new home and i'm going to try to contribute as much as I can.
