Remember in Monopoly that "bank error in your favor" chance card? Well today when I went to deposit my paycheck I looked at my balance and I had an extra five hundred dollars in my account that I had never seen before and had definatly never deposited!!!???
Is this possible? Is it some computer glitch? Did I actually obtain 500 mystery dollars? Do any of you know if I need to report this because I don't want to spend it only to get in some sort of legal trouble for spending what definatly isn't mine...but it's in my checking account so is it mine?

it might be a blessing.. or just a bank error. i dunno.. ive heard some stories of people getting "extra money" and then when they went to spend it, they had to pay it back.

that shit happened to me
i called to check my balance which i knew
was like .08 cents.
then it said i had like 700 bucks in my checkings.
i rushed over and withdrew 300.00
the next morning i got the other 300.00
spent it all and it was cool
on monday morning the bank calls and asks me for the cash back
i told em i smoked weed all weekend and it was gone.
they sent me to collections

Well I'm afraid to withdraw it because if they do make me pay it back it would take ages because I make virtually no money. I'll just let it be and if they take it back than so be it.
I'm definatly not going to call the bank about it. They would take it back then.

just because a guy who named himself chjism would do it doesn't mean it is the right decision for you....there could be legal implications....after all someone will likely complain when they discover they lost their $500. You might be lawfully forced to find another 500 to return.....who knows maybe jail time. aFTER ALL IT TAKES SOME REAL WEIRDOS TO WANT TO GO TO JAIL
on another note one time in vegas an atm gave me an extra 20 dollars that I did not get debited from my account....
YOU BET WENT BACK AND TRIED TO GET MORE FREE CASH.... IT DIDN'T WORK

when the bank fucks up, the money is yours, unless they take it back out before you spend it/withdrawl it... and if they do try to take it back afterwards, that's their problem... they may ask you to return the money, but you don't have to, and aren't lawfully required to either, atleast if you're in the us.

do NOT take it out or even think about spending it. instead put it into a savings account and let it draw interest until the bank figures it out...and they will, count on it. on the slight chance they won't find it the full amount will be yours after a certain amount of time but when they do find it any interest is yours to keep.
but unless you want to end up in a hole when that 500 bucks is removed from your account, keep it in the bank.
smart man, del. smart man.

yea i'd go with this, i'm retracting my statement, as i cannot find any viable proof i'm right.. i looked but couldn't find anything about it, maybe it's just on a bank to bank basis? i once read this story (it was true) of how this guy once took one of those fake checks you gettin the mail once in awhile (they're usually like 50,000 or something, and say thismoney is yours and all you have to do is __________________) well, he took it to a bank, and as a joke, tried to cash it, i can't remember if it was through a machine, or if it was a tellers mistake, but he had it cashed, and walked off with the money. the bank found their error and asked him to return the money. after a long drawn out legal battle (he refused to give the money back on principal, he was planning on giving it back in the first place, then the bank did something he didn't like so he refused to give it back) long story short, he won and got to keep the money (it was in the 10 thousands if not the hundreds)

del..., you're suggestion is great. I'm going to go and do that tomorrow, first thing. I figgure that if they don't call me on it in a couple months then they never will so after that I'll just assume it's mine.
thanks guys!

and if you really wanted to play the good guy, give them a call and ask about it. all you'll get is a token thanks most likely and it'll be quickly forgotten by them but at least you'll know what you did. and us...
it's a tough call there...follow your heart.

Take all $500 out and go to the nearest casino and drop it all on black.
If you win... deposit $500 back in the bank and do what del says about moving it to a savings account. The other $500 is yours to spend as you wish
If you lose....your screwed if they ask for the money back
50-50 chance.
Do you feel lucky? LOL:)

I'm with the "don't spend it" camp, if only because I know how vicious a bank can be when they want their money. They can and WILL send you to collections. It's not worth the hit to your credit history.

 banks are fuckers!.....literally!
If they've made a fuck up and you take it out its not your fault, its theirs so they cant make you pay it back. You thought it was yours... So it aint your fault.
