ok to answer one of my own questions, what causes root rot. It's due to low oxygen levels and temperatures. Low temperatures lower dissolved (DO) oxygen levels and high temperatures will also cause DO to be low.

So if you have algae growing that's your problem.

Above 75F makes it very likely.

And poor oxygenation at any temp will do it.

Usually colder is better, though, with high 60sF probably ideal, I believe.

In practice, it's usually hard to get the water too cold. Not sure about what the exact low threshold would be.

But what does algae have to do with root rot?

I was able to create low temps in the 40-50's just by leaving a hydro container outside. Even though I had a pump going all day, it still wasn't enough and I quit doing hydro outside till the weather gets nicer. The plants came in every night where the water stayed in the 70's. Once I started leaving the plants inside, they started growing. I shocked them everyday for a month and still got one female and 3 males in hydro. I'm waiting to see if the hydro female will turn hermie.

algae uses up oxygen Yes, it does! Never thought of that in terms of root rot. Very good!

As for the low temps, I figured you'd probably have to get down into the 50s to see real problems, which is pretty hard to do inside, at least inside where people are living.

Have you encountered any other problems with outdoor hydro other than temps?

Outdoor hydro. The temps were the problem and also I had 2 root die-offs, plus my ph was way too high. It was very strange. The plants didn't burn, they just didn't grow at all. They were miniature plants. Once I got my ph fixed and started leaving them inside, they took off. I am growing another set of seedlings and my soil growth is at least 2x larger than the hydro plants with seeds started the same day. I'm using gh nutes and correct ph, so I'm not really sure what is going on. They are under the same lights. The ones in soil are closer to the light by a couple of inches. I guess that's the difference, cause everything else is the same except the medium I'm growing them in.
