View Full Version : A couple of questions about flowering/vegging...

Hey all, Ive now built up the courage to try something a little more advanced than Lowryders... and no, not a Lowryder cross! Although I may try that when the crosses become a little more stabilised. Anyway, I digress.
I know that you have to veg for several weeks on 18/6 before switching to 12/12 to flower, but I really want to grow a sativa - preferably pure like a Durban Poison, but a hybrid will probably have to do for now. So, for the sake of argument a Durban Poison gets put in veg for 2 months and grows 6 feet tall. If I want it to grow shorter, I top it. This reduces height to 4 feet, which is still a little tall. So I do some LST, that enables the light to reach further down (600w HPS) and reduces height by another foot. 3 feet/1 metre is perfect!
Now, If I didnt want to mess around doing all of that, could I just veg it until its a metre tall then put it into flowering? I understand that they grow taller while flowering, but by how much? Double? Triple? And how much yield would I lose by forcing it into early flowering?

As with any strain, you can decide how big the plant will grow by deciding when to change to 12/12...(quick note... 24/0 is for veg... its better than 18/6, and unless you need the decrease in electric bill go 24/0). If you place a plant in flowering it will double its height if its Indica and it will closer to triple its height if its a sativa.
Therefore if you want you can take a 1' tall plant and flower it and it will easily stay under 2' - 3' depending on the strain...
As for yield... that can never really be decided ahead of time... too much depends on the conditions, strain, strength of plant, lighting, etc etc... but its easy to assume that a 3' tall plant will have less yield than a 4', which would in turn have less than a 5' etc etc etc.
I hope this helps,
peace and good luck,

Cheers. I think Ill go ahead and grow a DP, I just love the pure sativas. Ittl be interesting to see how much it will yield if I LST and top it so its only 3 foot high (max) when it goes into flowering.
On everyonedoesit.com, one of the mods ('Mum') grew 2 Durban Poisons outdoors and had to chop a week early because of mold... and still got 14 ounces!

Slow down buddy. 24/0 is good for seedlings, but after 1 - 2 weeks turn down to 18/6. The plants need a dark cycle, they will grow a hell of alot better. Remember, your trying to replicate the outdoors, and you never have 24/0 light outdoors.
And 18/6 has been proven to be better for the plants than 24/0
You need to research and know exactly what your talking about before giving advice.
You shouldnt loose too much yeild, but its up to you when you change the lighting. A sativa can easily tripple in hight diring flowering, but it'll will probably only double. Have fun man, good luck.
Also, how was the lowryder?

The Lowryder was alright, had to harvest way too early because the cat went in the cabinet while I was having a pee and the stem snapped. Was only a week into flowering, and I got just over an eighth dried. Was a nice clear, uplifting high with a little couchlock, but after it wore off (hour/hour and a half) I felt no grogginess at all, just had a lot of pent-up energy, which Ive never had before.
Growing another 4 (theyre 10 days old), two are doing well and the other two are really, really short... think they might have stopped growing for some reason. Im also germinating another 2, pots and soil is all ready for them. When I can determine the sex of them Ill upload some piccies.
Awesome, sounds great. I'm obsessed with them, i think it's just a great plant, and amzing how it grows. Now i know what the high is like i want to grow them even more lol.... cant get any blasted seeds though, i dont do the whole website thing, i get from my local headshop, but they aint got any, although i might get them to order me some lol ... good to hear your still growing, sorry to hear about your cat breaking the plant. Nearly happend to me once, but my car turned round saw me and ran for it lol

why all the questions about 24/0 vs. 18/6? It's not about replicating nature, its about the fact that the plant does most of its growing during the dark period, not the light period. Ever notice how your plants show the most change in growth the next morning, rather than at night before the lights go out after having been exposed to light all day? makes perfect sense

i use 24 my buddy uses 18/6 and we almost have the same set up and there isnt realy a noticeable difference... even with the temp drop when his lights do off , that realy doesnt matter either.....

Plants 'breathe' in and out differently in the daytime from the night-time. During the day and night plants respire, as we do. That's breathing in oxygen and breathing out carbon dioxide.
However, during the daytime, plants also photosynthesize. That's using the Sun's energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates for energy to survive and grow. When doing this, they breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. At night, of course, the sun isn't out, so photosynthesis ceases.
FROM THE WORLD WIDE WEB...
23/1 : )
18/6 is NOT the best in my Opinion... NOT THE BEST..
In the summer there are many plants that grow great in natural long day conditions.. 20+ hours
