View Full Version : Cleaning Glass Pipes
What's the best method to use when cleaning a glass pipe? I got one recently (well.. a month or two ago, but I've only used it maybe 3 times) And it looks something similar to this. (http://www.rollies.com/Images/RED-795.jpg) I wash it out as best I can after each session; even drown it in boiling water for an hour or two. But what about the resin building up inside?
Sorry if this seems like a total newb question, but you guys seem like you know what you're doing so I thought I'd ask.

Amount of salt? Good to know ;) .
Makes sense.
I wouldn't mind some further in-depth instructions if you have the time.
Thanks!

WHAT YOU NEED
large ziplock bag
salt
rubbing alcohol
boiling water
grill tongs (what you use to flip hotdogs on a grill)
and last but not least... dirty resin'd up bowl :)
First, get that water boiling. What you want to do is drop the bowl in the boiling water and let sit for 5 minutes without it moving. then, take your tongs, pick it up slightly
by its stem (whilst keeping it submerged in boiling water) and violently shake it back and forth without hitting the sides of the pan. u will see little pieces of resin coming out of it. now let it sit for a little while longer (3-5 minutes)
grab your ziploc, fill it up (not all the way, just how much u need) with rubbing alcohol u may also want to pour some salt into the alcohol and shake the bag a bit.
then, take the bowl out of the boiling water and without letting it cool pour salt first in the stem (not so much that the rubbing alcohol can't get through it) and then in the bowl itself. put the bowl in the rubbing alcohol ziplock, seal it up, and shake that shit for a good 30-40 seconds.
when it comes out u may see a tiny bit of resin left in the bowl part but grab some of those corn cob picks that u stab in the side of corn on the cob and just scrape out the resin. this method makes my pipe look and smoke like i just bought it that day.
some tips:
use a pot for boiling water that your parents dont use often in the house, because sometimes resin collects where the water line is and it's really really hard to get it out of the pot.
do this when no one will be home for a little while if you don't own any air freshener or if you don't have a window near your stove because it can smell when in boiling water and the smell sticks around. if you have air freshener don't spray it until you've turned the stove OFF.
i dont think i can make it any more clear :rasta: this method will work for u guarenteed, but u really don't need to clean your pipe after only using it 3 times. no matter what u do it's gonna collect resin, but when u dont have any weed u can scrape the resin, roll it up in a little ball, drop it in your bowl and smoke it. tastes funny but it will get you a nice buzz going if you're really bored or u just want some weed.
good luck :)

yo that rubbing alcohol shit works tight as fuck I haven't seen anything that tight in forever yo,.
Awesome, thanks a lot guys.
I think I'll try it with the denture tablet first, because I have those on me (use 'em to clean my retainer) but no rubbing alcohol.
bigjohnstud2o, do you use rice in the same way pixel uses salt? ie. apply rice to the bowl + stem, then shake it up in the ziploc bag that has the denture tablet. I'll most likely use salt because I have more of it.

Im sure this way works good but i usually skip a few steps so i can do it in the bathroom in like 5 min
1. First i usually grab the pipe and a paperclip and get as most of the resin as i can just by poking around in it
2. Then i get tongs and go to the sink
3. I turn the hot water on full blast and let it warm up, then i hold the pipe under the water (have a good grip on the pipe because glass will shatter on porcelin) doing this helps loosen up the remaining resin - use the tongs to avoid 1st degree burns
4. Then put like a tbsp of salt (or rice) in the pipe, this creates friction which wears the resin down, when its shaken
5. Cover the mouthpeice and carb, and pour in some alcohol
6. Then shake it vigorously for a few minutes and rinse the pipe
-If its not spotless, keep doing it until it is
7. then, leave the pipe to dry overnight so the alcohol evaporates
8. Now go smoke a fresh tasty bowl out of your sweet pipe
Give this method a try if those denture tablets dont work, this method also works good on bong chambers

Let the resin build up on the inside, then it catches ash and other shit that would be going right into your mouth. After a few months or whatever scrape it and get a big ball of gooey stuff to get you roasted.
Get a freezer ziplock bag, 1 tablet of efferdent (denture shit) and place it in bag with hot tap h2o and pipe. Shake for a second and take out. I use rice instead of salt. seems like it works better for me imo.
I don't have any rubbing alcohol on me at the moment so I'll try this method tonight.
I take it you put the rice/salt in the stem and bowl before placing the pipe into the ziploc bag, correct?
EDIT
Sorry, I just realized I've already asked this on a previous post in this thread. Consider this nothing more than a bump.

wow, absolutely amazing. i used the shorter method, running under hot water then filling it with rubing alcohol and salt, i didnt even remember my bowl lookin like this. the first method might be better for like your prized piece, but this works just fine, got rid of like 85% of the res.

I wouldn't want to smoke out of something that could leave behind a a residue like that. Isn't the main ingredient in that pure potassium which is corrosive?
Anyway, on cleaning your pipe, I just scrape that shit out (the resin) with a paper clip or bobby pin. Then, I put it back in the bowl, and smoke it, on top a piece of rolling paper if it's a small amount. or, I roll it around in my kief. Make sure you blow the resin out.
When it starts to get old, rubbing alcohol and salt work well. Then, make sure you rinse it well.

Smoking the scraped black resin is a bit odd cause it has a harsh taste, similar to half-assed honey oil or those other leftover chemicals you might taste in something homemade and think "I shouldnt be tasting this". Any nonpolar solvent should take the crap right out but rubbing alcohol has, for me anyway, tried and true worked the best and the fastest. Ethanol or vodka is slower and ether, although it should in theory work the best, barely works at all (was not 100% pure ether). Stick to isopropanol. Haven't tried salt but a pinch is all you'd need and that should help react stickier compounds, although I'd rinse it well afterward.
Alcohol (ethanol, methanol, or isopropanol) is one of few substances that will completely evaporate if pure or near pure with water added (i.e. 90% rubbing alcohol is 10% water). Anything with molecules dissolved in it will theoretically leave residue other than just undissolved resin that was there to begin with. Potassium is never a pure ingredient since it hates being in that state (much like sodium... they can just spontaneously combust), but it can make lots of salts, just like table salt would if not more. Without a very good solvent rinse afterward (like with rubbing alcohol), it'd be a bad idea. There are other things besides potassium or lye in commercial cleaners that make them very bad choices. Stick with the cheapest and best. Warning: only use on metal and glass.
Edit to say you can just buy a bottle of rubbing alcohol with a suitably large cap, drop the piece in, shake it around, pull it out a few hours later, and reuse the liquid in the future... if not just put a bit in a small glass and soak/stir your piece for a few hours. Keep away from flames even though its not very dangerous as far as solvents go, better safe than sorry. If you add salt you will want to rinse it out again with fresh, non-salted alcohol. rinse well with water and air dry only. Can also rub a pipe cleanr inside while its in the alcohol, works well.

What about Methyl Alcohol, like heet? (Gas line Antifreeze) I don t have any alcohol right now, but i have a bottle of this stuff around. It evaporates quickly just like rubbing alcohol. Any thoughts?
all you need to do is
1. take zip lock baggie
2. dump in a bunch of salt in the bag and in the pipe
3. pour in the the alocohol in the bag while the pipes in there
4. close bag and grab the pipe inside the bag and shake the liquid throught it
your pipe will look brand new in like 10 min
boiling it in water is a waste of time
my bong looked brand new after like 3 min's of shaking with the salt + alocohol combo!

Whix had the best advice! I tried the rubbing alcohol / salt / plastic bag method. wow, just do what whix said. put salt in pipe and in bag, then put pipe in bag and fill with just enough alcohol to submerge the pipe and shake that shit violently causing the alcohol to rush through all orifices of the pipe. After 5 mins the alcohol in the bag turned completely black so I emptied the bag and repeated the same procedure for 5 more mins and the pipe was perfectly clean and hittin like a champ! :rastasmoke: Now i only need to take one hit just like when I first bought the pipe and it gets me more toasted than toking on a resin'd up pipe all day.
they say the resin makes a natural filter but that idea sucks because everything doesn't make it into your lungs where it should be.

i personally like acetone, aka nail polish remover, in many situations it is actually a better solvent than even 99% alcohol. And i still do the salt trick with it. and it worked really well on my bong, it cleaned it in seconds. i actually just tonight just picked up more to do my other pipes in, and acetone is actually used as a glass cleaner in high precision scenarios, so i feel that the glass gets cleaner as well, it also evaporates easily and doesnt let the salt get dissolved to easily.
try it, and compare it.

Alcohol and salt works best, IMHO, but the key that people don't say is to use Kosher Salt. It is much coarser, and pointy and jagged. Its purpose is to be an abrasive inside your pipe, so put the salt in, then fill it with alcohol. 91% or 99% (gotta ask a pharmacist for that usually). 70% really does not work. You can use drinking alcohol such as grain alcohol (95%) but that gets quite expensive fast. Shake vigorously.
Acetone I hear works well too, but I have no first hand knowledge with that. I've also used the hot/boiling water method, and comparatively, that just doesn't work.
Also, I don't know why you want to clean your piece after ever use or two. I'll agree, a clean piece is the best, but only a bong needs to be cleaned everyday. Pipes get full of resin and its a good thing. It makes the smoke a lot smoother, and helps out in times of shortage (although that is the nastiest thing you can do) and helps catch any ash that pulls through or anything. It doesn't trap THC out of the smoke, besides what would normally be condensed on the walls of the pipe anyway. But if you are smoking anything with water, thats gotta be cleaned everyday. Not just a water change either, but alcohol and shit. Keep is looking brand new, and it tastes awesome. Bong water is nasty. Also if it's as clean as brand new, you can use hot water, which is a treat. Give it a shot before you knock it. It isn't "less thick" or whatever you guys will say. Just try it.
Tl;dr: 91-99% isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol + kosher salt + enthusiastic shaking.

My friend told me just the other day that his favorite abrasive is Epsom salt! I thought that was interesting- it is cheap, and it is chunky like Kosher salt. He also says that is the abrasive in Formula420- not table salt. I have yet to try this, but after this coming weekend, I'm sure I will have at least ONE piece that needs a good cleaning! ;D

I've heard it works pretty well, because it is chunky like kosher salt. I believe kosher works better because it is slightly smaller (fit pipes better) yet still chunky, and more jagged and pointy. Epsom is more like a cube (it's salt) but will still work far better than table (fine) salt. And the worst would be pickling salt (extremely fine).

Epsom should have a slightly different crystalline structure, as it is a different compound- MgSO4 rather than NaCl. I'm going to try both next time and report back which works better. I'm sure they are both perfectly effective, lol!
Oh man this is funny- I have to share it. So I have this girlfriend, who is awesome. And she has this bong, which is beautiful, and hits like a dream. However, it's not the cleanest pound of glass on the planet, and the ID of the slider had shrunk to a paper clip width due to resin buildup... and the bong is opaque, so we could only judge its contents by odor... which, needless to say, had been questionable for some time! Well, her husband is so attached to the thing that he didn't even want to give it up for one evening to be cleaned, so last week she left a couple joints on the coffee table and snuck out with the bong all bubble wrapped in a box. haha.
It took a full bottle of alcohol, lots of Kosher salt, some soaking, careful heating of the slider under hot tap water, and a LOT of encouragement from various pointy objects to get the gunk out of the slider even enough to stick a q-tip dipped in salt up there, and the bong itself- oh MAN I don't even want to know. I dumped a lot of bong residue down the drain, but did end up saving the alcohol in a glass jar.
The other morning as I was cleaning the kitchen I noticed that all the liquid in the jar had evaporated, leaving behind a thick black jelly. Mmm tar jelly for breakfast? There was EASILY about 1/4 CUP of pure, nasty, gloppy bong goop in there. And that bong is only about a pint total internal volume! Haha.
I totally saved it to show her husband why the ladies had been conspiring against him! :D

^that is disgusting. Im glad my pieces never get that bad.
though i also dont wash my bong out everday either, usually once a week or so i will rinse it out with acetone, which quite litterally melts the residues, i didnt even use salt when i cleaned my slider out and it is perfectly clean, except one black ring, where it would be useful to get something inside the ring of glass and scrape, then wash that out. I also only change the water every other day or so, and it is very obvious when i do cause it is stinky in the bathroom until i can rinse the sink out really good for a few minutes.
ive never seen the 99% alcohol in action, but ive never seen resin just run out of a bowl like it did when i was cleaning mine out.

Alternate stealth method for the above posted:
1. Boil water in kettle
2. Get a mason canning jar
3. Place towel, spread out, on floor.
4. Place mason jar on center of towel, place your pipe inside the mason jar, and leave the lid off, but right next to it.
5. Pour boiling water in mason jar. Cover with lid, but do not grip the jar with your hands to tighten, instead grip it with the towel.
6. Wrap jar in towel, and proceed to shake it, baby.
Then you just do the salt/isopropyl in the jar as well. Saves you the smell.
what i use is a waterpik, works like a dream for most pieces

I see everyone saying to boil it. You dont have to in fact sometimes boiling a pipe, is too much thermal shock for the glass to quickly, and the pipe will break.
easy 5-10 minute method
1. ZIP LOCK BAG
2. Epsom or kosher salt (you want salt that is abrasive)
3. 99.9% ISO Alcohol
put about a table spoon for every inch of pipe, could be less or more. Put enough alcohol to submerge pipe, and a little more.
Combine all ingredients into zip-lock bag, you can shake bag like shake and bake, or better seal bag, and hold pipe then shake.
you are using the salt as brushes, only they are free do do their work so you don't have too.
you can let them all soak for about 10 minutes before shaking, If it is a piece that is very dirty.
Things that help, the purer the alcohol the easier it is, the more abrasive the salt the easier it is, If you hold the pipe and not the bag while shaking, use the openings of the pipe to shake fluid and salt in the pipe over and over, very rapidly.
I clean my bong about every other day, or even every day sometimes, takes literally 5 minutes, and I have 2 tree percs , a diffuser, and 2 feet of bong to clean. for pipes I like to let the fume take some color, but not so much the taste is bad.
It is easy, no need for tongs, or fire, or heavy ingenuity, it is very simple and very easy once you get a handle on it, if its hard it does get easier.
If you keep your glass clean your taste is that much better, and your filtration is that much better.

I have tried everything except lacquer thinner.
I purchased a new ashcatcher and it developed a coating of something that just wouldn't even scrub off with cleanser!
Tried ZOOM, and even though I hate the ads, it works!
I didn't even have to scrub it, just watched it foam (chemical reaction) away whatever the coating was.

This is a repeat of a comment i posted but i want evryone to give this cheap method i have used for decades a try. Go to your local grocery store and buy a product called DIP-IT, it is used to clean coffee pots. 1st -Add the dip-it to a dry glass bong not the whole box, 2nd-Fill bowl with bowling water and wait a few min. and rince with more boiling water. If bong is really dirty repeat process. When your done clean with dish soap and cool water. Enjoy.. If you try this cheap method i guarantee you will thank me and be amazed by it. It will make an old glass bong like brand new again. I have used this method for 30 years and there is no better way IMO.

Or instead you could go to your local headshop and get some pipe cleaners (i use 420 and it works perfect) What it is is basically the same thing. Alcohol with some sort of gritty stuff. Im pretty sure its salt or really fine sand to brush away resin. It also has a nice scent lol! You may not want to spend the money on it (im not sure how much it goes for) but i know the guys in the headshop near my house so i get it for free. Im sure its only like 5 bucks or so though...

Firstly, this:
I see everyone saying to boil it. You dont have to in fact sometimes boiling a pipe, is too much thermal shock for the glass to quickly, and the pipe will break.
Second, I am suprised no one has mentioned white vinegar water? This is all I've ever used, it breaks down that resin like a charm and it just falls right off with the touch of a q-tip. Just let it soak for a few hours in a jar. That, and vinegar is less harsh and safer. I use it to clean all sorts of stuff.

Well the good thing about Iso is it is a solvent and also polar, meaning it can clean and dissolve things that are not polar(things such as tar and such that water doesn't clean) but can also be cleaned by the water seeing as it too is polar. If I'm wrong, my B, but that's what I remember from Chem Class.

dont boil your pipe, thats the dumbest thing you can do especially if its a glass piece, it weakens the temper of the glass. which means they break easier. use rubbing alcohol(white vinegar works too), its cheap and wont hurt the piece in anyway. Be smart people you spend money on the stuff take care of it.
How to properly clean a glass piece or any piece for that matter:
1. Get a ziploc bag
2. put your piece in there with enough iso alcohol to cover it
3. let it sit in there for a while(really depends how bad the pipe is)
4. after a while shake the bag up
5. take pipe out and rinse it out with the hottest water your hands can stand
6. any leftover residue can be easily removed with pipe cleaner sticks or Q-tips
7. after its dry load it up and toke
8. dont listen to bad advice!!

the rubbing alcohol and salt procedure works GREAT; however DO NOT boil you pipes, It doesn't happen all the time, but boiling your pipe often makes it very brittle, the alcohol and salt should be enough to get it done. I haven't looked too much into it but the salt might also be leaving small scratches in the glass.

ask any lamp worker if salt makes scratches and they will usually say, probably but I am still waiting to see one. but if it does scratch there is always a flame polish which is part of the properties of how cool glass is. had to add borosilicate glass is extremely hard to scratch we use, diamond tools to scratch and scour them and even then it is a process. I don't thing salt is like diamonds.

this saves you money so you dont have to waste it on 420cleaner or any product like that
just mix them together in a 4:1 ratio rubbing alcohol/salt and run it through the piece a couple of times

Don't put your pipe in the rubbing alcohol bottle. That will ruin all your rubbing alcohol and is a waste of money. Use a little more than enough to submerge it

What people listing are good methods but they are harmful. Full of non healthy chemicals and later on can take a toll on you. A lot of the cleaners out there are filled with tire degreaser and no natural product. Then people who clean with alcohol, is very bad for you especially since its at such a strong level.
I recently came up on a cleaner from friends called Clean Dream.
Its all natural and doesnt require much work. I was able to clean my piece within 30 seconds without having to scrub. Bonus was I was able to reuse the product that I cleaned my bong with to clean the down stem, 1 pipe and 2 bowls. So I didnt have to keep pouring liquid in.
It smells amazing and makes you feel healthy. Since its nothing bad for you. You should deff try it out and check them out online. I couldnt handle all the work of scrubbing and having it smell like hell.

Scrape your pipe as cleanly as you want, or not at all, some people don't enjoy smoking their resin so they can skip this step.
Fill your pipe with a teaspoon or two of salt, depending on pipe size. You can use regular table salt, sea salt (preferred) or rock salt.
Plug the head of your bowel with your finger or thumb, and pour rubbing alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, into the mouthpiece of your pipe.
Cover the mouthpiece with another finger or thumb and shake the pipe up and down vigorously but carefully, for a few minutes.
Dump out the waste and rinse thoroughly with tap water.
Repeat if needed until pipe is sparkling clean

an easy way to rid your pipe of resin is to put it on some news paper and microwave it for about ten seconds. resin will ooze out of it and unclog it. repeat if needed.

Dip it has been linked, recently, to severe reactions. There is a liquid Dip It product out there that claims to clean glass and negate scratches. BEWARE: There is a man in a local community that has lost his sight from using the wrong Dip It product. The legal team associated with this is quickly trying to get on top of this. BEWARE.
