What is your first language? I believe that if you manage to master the English language, you'll be just fine in "ampserdam".:thumbsup:

i'm guessing he's either high, a bad typer, or both. just look at the rest of the text. I'm actually trying to gain Duth citizenship since my father was born and raised in Holland. I hope to have an apartment there by next year if all goes well with my new website (see my signature). Most Europeans in general are fairly intelligent and can speak a fair amount of English. In Amsterdam specifically, most residents speak English because they're a very smart people. It wouldn't hurt to learn a little bit of Dutch so you "blend in" more and pick up cute Dutch girls too. ;)

There aren't dope vending machines (at least anywhere outside a coffeshop). Mainly because cannabis is still technically illegal in Holland. They just "ignore" it in place of arresting people for it. Cannabis sales are allowed in a limited number of cafes only (they had to exist when the government gave exemptions to current coffeshops to allow for the sale of up to 5 grams per customer, with a limit of how much total stock they can have at any one time). There are also what are called "smart shops" that sell things such as mushrooms and other legal substances. This is however learned from reading and watching a few good documentries about Holland and Amsterdam.

Naturalisation as a Dutch citizen
An application for Dutch citizenship by naturalisation must meet all the conditions below:
*aged 18 or over;
* holder of a permanent resident permit;
*5 continuous years residence in the Netherlands, the Dutch Antilles or Aruba with a valid residence permit. There are a number of exceptions to this rule.
*sufficiently integrated in Dutch society and are able to read, write, speak and understand Dutch. This must normally be proved by taking a naturalisation test. Successful completion of an eligible integration course is an alternative.
*in the four years preceding the application, the applicant has not been given any custodial sentence, training order, community service order or high monetary penalty.

From what I hear it's very hard to get a job at a cafe unless you know the owner or something.

I lived in Amsterdam with my family for about 2 and 1/2 years. The Dutch have REALLY cracked down on illegal immigrants and people who just try to stay and live there. My father was Dutch and Thankfully and I got my dual-cito before he passed. Best bet would be to take like 10,000$$$ and just stay as long as possible.

Man the naivity of some folk, how many people do you think you would be competing with for a job in a coffee shop. To work in the Dam one of the things they want is multilingual people because of the amount of German and French tourists, it would help if you can speak at least 3 languages. More importantly the rules of working there are getting stricter , if the only reason you want to live in The Netherlands is because of pot then I would say you are typical of the kind of person the Dutch would rather stayed at home.
Holland is not a country of potheads, they are in general just the same as folks anywhere else and if you think living there is gonna be some kind of pot heaven then you are sadly mistaken. The Dam is not representative of all Holland it is but a small part.
