When/how?

When can you determin what strain something is? and how do you do it? what abut sex how early can you see that?

you cant really tell strain from strain to often. you can tell indica from sativa by the size of the leaves, kinda. but theres too many strains, and many of them go by the same name and show different characteristics depending on the breeder it came from. identifying the strain is sometimes impossible even for those of us that have smoked em' all.
As for the sex of the plant it'll usually start to show toward the end of veg or early in flowering, unless your growing outdoors then it shows whenever it wants.
Dont really worry too much about the strain, i've grown tons of bagseed weed, sometimes you get a winner, sometimes you dont. all that really matters is growing it as best as possible, and getting decent smoke in the end.

There's a rather large distinction between the 'three' species [ or sub-species as one Carolus Linnaeus would have it ].

And as far as showing sex -- most sativa dominant strains show at least preflowers within 2.2 months. So it'd be safe to assume indica and ruderalis dominant strains would show much earlier -- ruderalis more so than indica.
