View Full Version : Age of Cannabis Consent?

I've been thinking about this for a while as its always a great topic of conversation among cannabis users. Most recently I've been in discussions with kids that have been busted by their parents and are all pissed off that their parents got so damn upset about them smoking cannabis. Now let me just say that I personally started using cannabis on a regular basis when I was 14 (first started when I was 11) so it may sound a bit hippocritical of me to make this statement.

I don't think that any children should be allowed to use cannabis. The age of consent for cannabis use should be at least 18 if not 16. Think about it, most people wouldn't want their kids getting drunk when they aren't old enough to even drive a car yet, so why should cannabis be any different? I'd like to hear what other people have to say on this subject, so please post your thoughts on this.

ture, thats a good point! consent only applys to minors, once 18 you an adult and dont need consent. i dont know where you live but here in the us the problem isnt the age of consent, its legalization without that consent means nothing!

I don't think there should be a definite age. When a person is mature enough to handle it, he's mature enough to handle it. It doesn't have much to do with the number of years that have gone by since he was born.

ture but kids/young immature people will still smoke it even if they shouldnt, then if they do something wrong or get hurt it will be blamed on the weed, thats the kinda ammo that people use to make it illegal, also a minors parents are responsible for them and anything stupid he does will be on them. having a set age is like a safty net!

I personally believe you shouldn't be messing with your neural chemistry at such a young age when you're brain is still developing. Kids generally do what feels good, I think they should wait till an age where they have a little more life-experience and really decide what kind of health-decisions they're willing to make.

Stop it right there. I dont care if you are older now if you were 14 and smoked then you should understand that "children" as you call them have opinions too. Me being 15 would of course stand up for my age group with this subject but thats not why. I believe that we have rights to and I dont like when people try to tell us "you cant do this, your too young". Because of this most teens who smoke weed does keep it a secret because their parents cant handle it. Fortunatly for me though my mom smokes so she doesnt care :p...well that is when I finally fessed up.

18 for sure. There's a good reason why even though tobacco is legal it isn't legal for kids. As much propaganda as there is about weed, smoking it is BAD FOR YOU, period. When your body is developing it is even worse for you. When your brain is growing mind altering chemicals are NOT what you should be using. Most of the people under 18 are simply too stupid to make a good decision about whether they should be smoking or not. Many of the underage posters here prove that. I miss overgrow and their 18+ only policy...

im sure those of you who are like yeah 18+ have legitament reasons for beleiving so

but what you also have to remember is that not every person under 18 is immature and unexperienced in the game of life, some of us have lived more in a sense, if you know what i mean

and thne there are all the failure 30y/o's living in the mommys basements etc. what do we say for them? the number of years in no way depicts how wise a person is

18 sounds about right. I had smoke a ton, but I didn't go daily till I was about 18. Besides, doing shit that you're not supposed to do it half of the fun when you're not legal yet :)

Who sets the age? The government? Who enforces it? The police? I don't think that's a very good idea. Leave it up to the parents to deal with that kind of stuff. They know a lot better than the government whether or not the kid is mature enough. Besides, punishing the kid with the law is never going to make him change his mind. Trust me, I've seen it happen.

I agree with you. Children (as I have called the group of people of ages 16 and under) do have rights. While I won't ever say that any one individual shouldn't be allowed to do something because "they're too young", I must say that as a whole group (and I was one of them once), younger people (notice I didn't say children this time  ) are more likely to abuse their rights. they are also more likely to violate the rights of others. now I'm not saying that ONLY people younger than 16 do this, in fact a large marjority is done by so called "ADULTS".

Laws are based on generalities. Maturity is not something that can be categorized or measured, therefore it is my belief that numerical age is the best determining factor to consider in these cases.

And just so you know, my parents didn't really care that I used cannabis when I was younger, but that I was breaking the law. That because of what I chose to do, I could have been put in jail is what they were truly worried about. In fact, this is something that they still worry about, however they also have come to realize that it is a mature decision that I am making. The decision being that I choose to use cannabis, not abuse it. I guess that is what makes this discussion such a hot topic. It's not that children aren't mature enough to make an educated decision to use cannabis, but that they are more likely to abuse cannabis.

Great discussion everyone, keep this up!

I believe that adolescence is a sacred developmental period that determines who you will be for the rest of your life. I don't believe there should be legal penalties but those that spend the entirety of adolescence smoking pot are missing out on a lifetime of being stoned.

Making this a rights issue is naive. Children aren't always right. Growing up is very much about accepting this fact.

It's different because alcohol kills hundreds of thousands of people a year. Alcohol kills brain cells. Cannabis does NOT. It's really that simple :)

It's nice you think it should be 18, no really it is. I'm not going to say I don't really care what you think, because I do!

Anywho, Cannabis > Alcohol > You

The thing is no matter what any of us say it wont change the fact that cannabis affects our brains wether short term or not and I think kids should give their brains a chance to develop properly before they start messing with it.

Also, no matter what any of us say kids are going to want to get drunk and high. And the more forbidden the fruit looks, the more tempting it will be. Look at the rate of teenage alcohol abuse in the US, where the drinking age is 21 and strictly enforced, and compare it with France where it's not illegal or uncommon for parents to give their teenagers a little wine at dinner.

I would say it has little to do with age, but more with your maturity level. I have been smoking for 3 years and I am a responsible kid, get good grades in school and shit, so I can smoke pot
