No, its the smoke that you didnt get while taking a hit, thats why there's usually a pull-carb. Pull the card and hit the rest of it, the reason you might cough is because of the oxygen that is being pulled in along with the smoke.
Smoke changes in something after it has been burnt. Try taking a toke on a ciggerette and then leavine the smoke in your mouth for about 30-50 secs. When you take it down into your lungs you should cough your brains out if you have done it right. Thats just to show you how it changes.
i know it changes, and i know the way to avoid it is to use the carb/clutch, but i wanna know WHY this happens....

The chemicals probably decompose further into a stale tasting smoke. Thats just a guess.

I don't think people are really understanding the question. The ghost smoke that you do not intake is the same as the smoke that just entered your mouth. Stale air is when you do not let the air escape (i.e. putting your hand over the bong) for a few seconds. and then take the hit of the ghost smoke. The smoke that builds within the bong during those few seconds becomes very rough and tastes horrible. I have found no scientific evidence of why this process occurs, but I will continue to search.
This is different from a dead hit, which is taking a hit that is filled with no THC, only the ash of what is left in the bowl. Everyone who owns a bong knows what this is. It's that last hit that tastes like someone just filled your mouth with ash. Personally, I can stand a dead hit, which I don't inhale, only use to clear the bong, but I cannot stand the stale air. It makes me gag.

its because smoke is a bunch of tiny molecules that are about the same mass as air, they float around and when you let them float around too long they start sticking together to form larger molecules and so when you inhale after the smoke has had a chance to "coagulate" the smoke is much thicker and denser and makes u cough more.
thats why
