I asked this same question a few weeks ago after reading the high times article regarding this subject and still was confused. While all the answers from other members helped, the only way to truly find out is to smoke the different types.
Just the other day I had my first encounter with indica. While I was anticipating getting blazed as it was high grade weed, I didn't. Instead of my surroundings becoming confusing, my vision being distorted slightly, my mouth being dry, my heart beating fast, and that "whoa" feeling I was accustomed to getting, I was FULLY aware of my surroundings, and instead of my mind becoming cloudy, it got extremely clear. Instead of feeling BLAZED, or high, I felt "stoned". My body didn't twitch like it does with what I was used to. Instead, my body felt extremely heavy, relaxed, and VERY comfortable. I was more social, and enlightened with everything.
Because of what people described indica as, I determined that this was indica. I'm not that big of a fan of it. While it makes your BODY feel nice, your mind doesn't really get affected. The other weed I've had was either sativa, or a hybrid of sativa and indica. That made me have the good mental effects along with some physical effects.
While the indica I've been smoking makes my body feel good and nice, it kind of is a disapointment if you go into it expecting to get baked for a few hours. I'd chose the mid-grade that I get, which I presume is a indica/sativa hybrid over Irish Oz (the indica I've been smoking which is very high-grade) any day.

I presume that indica would be best for people with pain, who are using marijuana for it's medicinal purposes. Your mind doesn't really get cloudy, and you don't forget things as much, you just feel numb, warm, relaxed, and very comfortable. If you want something that will be fun, get you baked and blazed, and feel good, I'd go for sativa, or some sort of hybrid.

I've only been smoking for around a month, so I'm still a beginner, but I hope I helped answer your questino.
Peace,

Indicas give a more relaxing body high, almost narcotic. Like horror business said, you get a very comfortable feeling. You tend to just want to sit and chill and are more inclined to look for or the nearest couch (hence the term "couchlock") than the nearest party.

Sativas give you an up, happy high. Your mind is definitely more affected. You'll be more energetic and more likely to want to do something.

Indicas tend to be a bit darker in color. If you've got some really dark green, or purple buds it is likley to be an indica. Sativas tend to be a bit lighter in color. There are exceptions, however, and a lot depends on how the weed is grown/dried/cured so color alone isn't a perfect indicator.

I like both indica and sativa and usually choose depending on what I am doing. If it's night time and I'm just kicking back at home I like a good relaxing indica. If I'm doing something active or something like yard work, however, a more energetic sativa is the way to go.

Most of the weed grown/sold in the U.S. is a cross breed of both indica and sativa.

I love indica, cos i love the full body feeling. Sativa is good for parties, but i normally go 50/50 with skunk.

I've been getting a lot of Indicas lately, and to be honest I don't really like it. But it helps with my insomnia!

Sativa during the day and evening, then a nice indica before bed.

Also, sativas are more likely to make you paranoid, ponder things, think of weird shit, and feel uneasy, where indicas just make you feel extremely comfortable and with a sense of good well being, like you are happy to be where you are, you don't think as much with indica, you just focus on your beautiful surroundings.

With that said, I think that indica would be a perfect anti-depressant.

.

Good point, although I've always found sativas just amplify feelings your already having, not neccessarily in bad way. For example, if your stressed out or bothered by something you're likely to feel uneasy and get paranoid. If, on the other hand, your in a good mood and not stressed out they tend to make you happier and give you the giggles.

Indicas are short, bushy plants. Their leaves are short and very broad. The buds grow dense with large, round calyxes

Sativa's grow very tall, the leaves are thin and long. the buds are somewhat smaller and fluffier. the calyxes are usually narrower and spaced slightly
