View Full Version : I carved these pipes

I have been carving wooden pieces for a while as a hobby. I collect Y-shaped branches when I go for walks and make sherlocks out of em. It's a good feeling to make ur own pipes, here is two pics of my first one ever made.
It is still one of my favorites. These images are resized, so I hope easier to see.

This one is probably my favorite, I left the bark intact cause it was really cool looking. It hits extremely well.

Just different kinds that I found in the woods, I didn't identify them. I just make sure they feel like hardwood.

The designs on this one were made using a woodburner.

I use a hand saw to cut the branch. You might use sandpaper after the knife if you want it to be smooth (brings out the grain of the wood more).
I use an electric drill with a long 1/4" drill bit or a little skinnier, use that with a vice to drill the hole through the stem. Then a smaller drill bit goes through where the bowl's gonna be, to meet the hole you already drilled inside (you have to be careful in lining it up). I use a sanding tool with small drillbits and stuff to carefully dig out the bowl.

trich you ever see the guy on overgrow that grew monster outdoor plants and then used the trunks of them to make various bongs and pieces like yourself, he had some pretty amazing pieces, what kinda wood is that? and do you treat it so when you smoke out of it it doesnt burn wood particles?

Those are some very nice pieces you made there bro. Would you consider selling one to me? If you can, e-mail me here:

I'd love to buy one from you. I especially like the Sherlock ones. I've been looking for something unique and that def. has it. Get back to me man, like I said, I'll buy one if you offer one. I'd make one myself, but I have Parkinsons and it makes holding things very difficult.
Peace.

ever think about staining the outside (not inside the bowl or stem)

well not really but that might be cool. I don't know much about staining, and I've just been using the tools I have at hand right now. Plus, I really like that rough natural look for now.
Nochowderforyou, I sent you an email.

The craftmanship in those pipes are incredible. I would highly value those art pieces if I were you. You could use that skill to your advantage. I am also an artist of sorts, I love to draw.

Those pipes are fucking awesome. I'd like to try my hand at carving now that I see those, honestly. I'd like to try for a more Gandalf style pipe, maybe even dressed in Native American fashion.

Those long-stemmed pipes would be extremely hard to do with the techniques I've been using, if not impossible. I think you really need to make two pieces and attach them afterwards, but I still don't get how you hollow out a long curved branch.
But yeah, all of the LOTR pipes from the movies kick my ass.
