hardwoods?

hay all, ive been wanting to make a wooden pipe soon (sick of tinfoil) and i was told that it won't taste liek ass if its made out of hardwoods, so what are classified as "hardwoods"? im guessing pine and oak are NOT hardwoods? what about the shit broomsticks are made out of? i'll probably end up goin outside and grabbin a stick off a tree or some shit. can anyone help me out here?

how about hickory? last night i tried making a pipe out of what i thought was a hickory drumstick (vic firth if there are any drummers out there who can tell me what its made out of) and its goin pretty good cept i can't figure out what i'm gonna do for the bowl and i cant find the drill! lol it might end up just being a mini steamroller

i dunno man, i suggest gettin a few different types of woods, then just hold a lighter to it for a while, youll be able to tell what will burn and what wont
