View Full Version : Trouble getting seeds to start

So I ordered some seeds from Nirvana and I am having trouble getting them to do much of anything.

I know it is something I'm doing; I just donā??t know what it is. I bought AK-48, White Widow and White Rhino. I can get them to germinate using the paper towel method, but I have moved them into the rockwool cubes and I get nothing.

They have been in the rockwool for almost three weeks and I see nothing. The rockwool is in a tray with a humidity dome over it and a heat mat underneath. I am using a 150 watt incandescent grow light from above, and water them once a day.

Could it be over-watering? I am thinking about getting two of the T-5 fluorescents, would that help? Please help, I am very frustrated.

Thanks

If the towel method was working for you, why change it?

Don't fix something that isn't broken! As for overwatering, I doubt that's the cause because you can technically germinate seeds in a glass of water.

Lights, you dont have to worry about. In fact, seeds and tap roots hate light. Keep the lights OFF of your seeds!

Are they swelling up at all? Well.. you said they were in rockwool, hrm. How deep were they planted?

Rock wool isn't the best medium. Try some plugs, like the Jiffy peat pellets, and keep the seeds at about 70 degrees F. Might want to invest in a heat mat or a Germination Station by Hydrofarm.

I can get the seeds to germinate in the paper towels without a problem. The problem comes when I move them from the paper towels after they have germed into the rockwool to become seedlings. I put them in the rockwool, and nothing happens, the taproot will stop growing. That's why I figured it was an over watering problem.

the tap root is very fragile and the holes in rock wool are small and kind of coarse so use extra caution.

The holes are pen size and small for clones but for seeds kinda big.
If he isnt packing the seeds inside good then I would have to guess its a Oxygen problem and its killing his plants.

Are you doing a soil or Hydro grow?

If soil use Jiffy peat pellets plant about fingernail deep.
If using Hydro then rockwool is your best friend just make sure you are packing the cubes well enough so the roots wont get oxygen because it will kill them or put them into shock causeing growth to hault.
