How gradually did you become addicted? How long before you started getting cravings, etc.
Im a social smoker, but im beginning to worry that im getting hooked, because i have a very addictive personality. I smoke maybe 5 or 6 a weekend at parties and with friends.
The only time i really have a craving to smoke is right after i finish a cig off, i get the urge to pick another right up again. That, and when im on my way to school in the morning because im bored.

Boredom = Addiction.
Keep your mind on something else. :D
I started smoking fags when i was 7, and got into about 10 a day when i was 10. Then it went up and up and im at 30 a day now, sometimes less but not often. It took me about 2 weeks to start needing them. With weed i dont feel like this at all. Mainly because weed isnt addictive.
Bit of adivce, stop now mate before you get worse. Take this from someone who knows. It's killing me, but i cant stop. Its killing you, but you can stop, so do it. Smoke weed at parties, and live!

buy newports, take out all the tobacco and then make your own rollies with em, they are hardcore and you only need 1 a day like that

I used to be a social smoker kinda like you, then I started buying a pack here and there. I smoked a decent amount for prolly 4 months, something like 4-5 a day on average, and only felt somewhat physically addicted. It was my chest and lungs that told me it was time to stop before I didn't have that option. About a week of not smoking I already noticed an improvement. Sure they are "fun" for whatever reason, but its not worth it.
My main thing for smoking as many as I did was my long drives I had. The drive is boring, so a cig seemed to keep me occupied. Now I just smoke a bowl or something and I don't even think about cigs.

i hate the fact that tobacco is one of the major leading causes for deaths in the usa.. maybe even the world.. but fuckin cannabis which is illegal hasnt killed one person atleast not of my knowledge...
Ya cigs are deadly and are addicting... i started like 4 or 5 years ago when i was 14...havent stopped... it started out a social thing but after like 4 months of just smoking some in front of my friends i got addicted cause i was more calm every time i had one ...
now at a pack and half a day... parliaments lights still for 3 years now:D

The only reason I started smoking was because during Basic training in the Military everyone that smoked got a smoke break and those that did not had to keep scrubbing floors or what-not. I was hooked and slowly dying before I knew it.
I have been tobacco free for nearly four years now after 24 years of two packs a day. Quite cold turkey, and that in itself is another story entirely, but the point I am trying to make is that I feel sooo much better and even though I am a MMJ patient, the quality of life is much better now being a non (tobacco) smoker.
My advice to ANYONE thinking about starting to smoke is simple .... Don't!

Ive consistently only had 1 or 2 in a day, with no compulsion to have more. People can enjoy them on a minor level like I do and other seem to have this compulsion to smoke fight against it and fail constantly; for example an annoying buddy who tells me that I need to quit in front of other people yet is the most addicted and spastic 8yearold of a man I have seen

i know it is. and i knew these were the kinds of replies i would get. i guess ill try to keep it to 4 a week, and just on weekends.
the reason i asked was because i was hoping that when i started getting cravings, then i could recognize them and realize that it was time to take a break.

I like this post. I started smoking butts back when I was 14. Ciggarettes for myself just kind of worked into my life I smoked them casually with friends then when I got bored then when I felt "Stressed" whatever that is at age 15, then around 17 I felt a heavy need for nicotiene and was chain smoking half out of addiction half out of this compulsive behavior to keep smoking and smoking then at 18 I quit for a month cold turkey after I was having awful chest pain and felt some wierd lump in my throat. Stupidly I am smoking again but one thing that I have noticed with smoking ciggarettes is it puts a burden on eating well and leading a healthy life because mentally it's almost like society has impounded the idea ciggarettes are so horrendous for your health that it is hard to smoke ciggarettes and then do anything positive for your health like eat a salad excersize ( minus the obvious reasons with this one)etc They are just bad bad bad really stop smoking them tell your friends your done smoking butts and stick to it it feels phenomenal to be butts free. :)

yea you're getting sucked into the vicious cycle lol
you tell yourself its just a social thing at first... and for the most part, it is... but after a few months you will want them all the time, for a ton of different reasons
i remember the first time i realized i was addicted. i was like "WTF?!" lol yea those tobacco companies get ya good

It's not very well known, but the tobacco growers use Polonium 210, which is radioactive, to help grow. This is what causes the majority of tobacco-related cancer cases. Even former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop acknowledged this.
I quit over 15 years ago.

eh i dunno. i still have absolutely no craving for them. I have a pack in my car all the time, and the only time i pick them up is when my friend asks if i have any.

I've been smoking on and off all my life up until I was 14, I went through a very rough time, and I was smoking 4 cigs a day for about 3 weeks, then that number gradually started to rise and now I'm 18 and I smoke a pack a day
I suggest you quit while your ahead, there are a lot of risks with smoking
also when u do get addicted, it fucks with your head
when you run out of cigs, the nic fits suck ass

Ya me and a buddy skipped the whole day of skool, and there was nothing to do so we smoked daggers all day me and him finnished his whole like 24 (i think thats whut tyhey come in) pack in like 6 hrs and over the march break I got stoned and watched family guy and I saw em smoking and I was like damn I want one, and now i got some craving but im not gonna let myself get me addicted. I usually smoke cigs because ya boredom. Dont do em they take money away from cash you could be spent on real drugs like weed n X n mushies, plus tobaccos worse for u than weed.

I really wish I had never started smoking cigarettes. I've tried to quit a few times. It's easier for me to not smoke pot or drink than to give up my nicotine. It's been about 6 years of heavy smoking and I'm definitely feeling it in my chest and throat. I can't understand how people smoke for like 30 years +. If you're not addicted, don't smoke at all. There's no point in just being a social smoker, because one day you may become addicted, and that sucks.
