View Full Version : My first grow,

Whats up yall, I've been around for a few months mainly reading, keeping a low profile, and doing my best to learn all that I can. About a month ago, I got up the courage to start a grow. I'm not sure what strain I'm growing. I just took some seeds I had lying around, germinated them and put them in some miracle gro brand soil.
I guess I'll give a few stats on my closet/growroom:
- 4ft wide (I'm using 3ft of that)
- 2ft deep
- 5ft tall
- Currentlly I have 2 cfl's putting out 2900 lumens each (I read somewhere I need about 3000 lumens/sqft When I get my money straight I'm going to get a 400w hps)
About my babies
- 5 plants (unkown strain)
- each in an 8" pot
I'm not expecting a whole hell of a lot with this low rent grow of mine as far as yield. More than anything, I hope to learn a lot. Oddly enough though, it seems to be going quite well as far as the veg goes. Everyday my apartment smells more and more like green (thank goodness for 2 bedrooms and no roomates).
Anyways thats all for now, I'll do my best to keep this thing updated.
any comments, questions, advice, suggestions, etc., by all means, let me know.
Btw, here are the first couple of pics I've taken.

Here are some more pictures pardon my leg in one of the shots.
They're really begining to smell. I love the smell, but its no good for my friend discretion. :o I think I may place a anti odor cfl in my growroom extra light and less odor is a good thing right?
I'm thinking I need to puts some fans in the room asap to thicken the stems. Also I'm thinking once ths smallest plants reach 1ft tall, I'm going to flower.
Anyone have any idea what strain these ladies are?

looking good, you definately need more lights though, I hate lumens they confuse me, how many watts is each light. and getting that fan would be great. Also, put the lights closer, cfls are really cool. Id say get another two cfls on that for now, and get that HPS as soon as possible, it might be a good idea to get an MH/HPS and 2 seperate bulbs as this will increase yield
gin4dub

My lights are 45w cfl's according to the package, they'd be the equivalent to having 2 150w incandecents, I'm not really sure about that though.
Hello gin :) You have certainly done the right thing by reading up before you started growing, that really does help;)
You started them about a month ago, they are coming on ok, you're doing fine :)
Yes if you can get the money together, try and go for a ballast that will take both the MH and the HPS bulbs, that really is the best combination.
However don't worry they look healthy and they are coming on as they are now ;)
Yes if you start them on the flowering cycle when the smallest is about twelve inch you should have plants that end up about two foot or so. That means they should still get light at the bottom.

Nothing really too new, just rotated my biggest lady with one of her sisters so the smaller one could could get more light. Damn, they smell good. I'm psyched, I would have thought my babies would have imploded by now (I got that kind of luck) Here a few more pics too.

My ladies are comming along nicely. I noticed a little yellowing around the edges of the leaves of 4 of my ladies a few days ago, so I stopped giving them nutes (I was using miracle gro, I've read many places that I shouldn't but it seems to be working). Also does anyone know what strain my ladies are? My biggest one looks like she might be some sort of mostly Indica strain (short and bushy right?) the others look like they might be a strain of mostly Sativa (tall and thin right?)
Finally, here are a few pictures of my girls, man they're getting big. By the time I have the money to get my 400w hps/mh light. it'll be time to flower these ladies. I can't wait. :rasta:

DO NOT USE MIRACLE GROW!!! I REPEAT DO NOT USE MIRACLE GROW. In the early days of my grow i wanted to use Miracle Grow, and i would have, but i got the biggest uproar on the boards here on not to use it. I use Shultz, i even have it at a power not too commonly used (15-30-15) but i dilute it a little. Your plants are doing fine, but the light situation absolutely needs to switch come flowering time. The Shultz does wonderfully for my ladies... But all things set aside, your doin good, keep it up...
Stay UP :rasta:

I'm working on getting better lighting, but I also have to pay bills, fix my car (clutch and head gasket both need replacing), and eat; mais c'est tout bon bien que  . As much as I'd hate to do it, I may just have to flower using the crappy ass cfl's I already have. If all else fails, I may just get as many cfls pushing as many lumens on the correct light spectrum as I can afford (maybe a flourex or 2 or 3) and just do the damn thing.
If I'm correct (please tell me if I'm wrong) I figure I'm growing in a 3ftx2ft (approx 91cm x 61cm) or 6 sq. ft (approx .557 sq. m) area.
I've read that I need at least 2000-3000 lumens per sq. ft.
If this is the case than I need at least 12000-18000 lumens (50000 lumens from an hps hid would be beuatiful but that isn't in my budget right now)
Hell, I'm a crafty guy, I may just have to pull off a miracle, or two, a la Gin. Wish me luck folks. I may just have to post a new thread on ghetto engineering .

how tall are your plants now??
My perdominantly Indica strain plant (I'm pretty sure she's Indica) looks to be about 12-13 inches (30.5-33cm) tall
The plant that looks like a Indica dominant Hybrid (imo) is around 14 in (35-36 cm)
The plant that looks like a perdominantly Sativa strain, is around a 13 inches (33cm) tall
My other two ladies (both Stativa dominant) are around 10 inches (25 cm) tall.
It's almost time to flower them:dance:

Yeah, so here is an update. Lighting still sucks (and isn't going to get any better), the grow isn't going as well as it was. As you can see in the pictures theres been some over watering on the tallest plant. Honestly y'all all things considered (I'm not going to bore y'all with my life's issues) I think I may just scrap this grow and try again when I can afford to do it right.

Hello gin4dub :), Don't you dare even think about scrapping the grow, I'm the one who says that kinda thing anyway :o ;)
They are looking fine Gin ;) like you say the tallest one is a little droopy but you also know what the cause is so there's no problem there anyway.
Also never worry about having a good moan and groan on here about life's little problems, I'm always doing it ......................... it's a good outlet for them ;)

Stop worrying so much. Invest in a 400 watt MH lamp and ballast. You still have several more weeks to go in Veg before flowering takes place. Miracle Gro is just fine, the only additional element needed is H2O, water from a flowering can ever other day with a count of 10. When in flowering, planted in a 1.5 gallon container the count is 45 for watering. Count off to yourself once the head starts pouring. End of.

Wassup GIN.
Nice, healthy looking plants you got there.
I'm on my first grow too, and I'm also using miracle grow soil. I wish I wasn't. MG soil has slow release nutrients, so it's impossible to control exaclty what nutrients your plants are recieving, and it's easy to over-feed your plants. Also, MG soil has poor drainage. I can only water my plants once a week because it takes so long for the soil to dry after I soak them.
So, when you transplant your girls into 3 gallon pots or whatever you're going to use, I suggest making your own "soilless mixture". People use peat moss, vermiculite, perlite, and some other things. You can do some research to figure out exactly what to use and what percentages. But I highly suggest not using miracle grow soil when you transplant.
You got the right idea on saving up to buy an HPS system. If not for this grow, for your next one.
Sorry to tell you, but if you think the plants smell now... just wait. They smell 10 times worse during flowering.
Like you said, first time grows are a learning experience. I've learned SO much from my grow and from this forum, and it sounds like you are too. Best of luck to you!
joe.

This morning I added around 5400 lumens of light to my growroom. If my addition is correct I'm up to 12171 lumens total;
2-2900 lumen 42w cfl's, (150w incandesant equiv)
2-2000 lumen fluoex full spectrum 25w (100w incandesant equiv)
1-1471 lumen 25w cfl (100w incandesant equiv)
1-1700 lumen 26w cfl (100w incandesant equiv)
more I'm not sure how much of a difference that'll make for my plants but I have noticed that now my eyes can't comfortably handle the light for even short periods of time . If my job stops screwing with me and my money, I might be able to get an hps in the next few weeks. My #1 priority is fixing my car though. The sooner I do that the sooner I can find another, better paying job then my grows will really be nice.
Finally my tallest plant is coming around nicely, the indica plant that imploded on me a little bit ago is thriving again, and here are some pics of my new lights. Impressive?... hell no but I like em darnit.:D

You can't add lumens!
But, it still helps, because the new lumens put out by each bulb will focus on individual parts of your plants.. The more bulbs, the more growth.. But you still can't add lumens together... Sorry!:p

Hey Gin...
I did not read the entire thread in detail..
But you should be at least 1-2 weeks into flowering
you plants are NICE.. and they will mature into good solid BUDS...
BUT you need to CLONE now or flower NOW...
There is no time to loose..
You have managed to grow plants with minimal lights with very little stretching...
This means better heavier denser buds..
KUDOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thing is, GK, I am about a week into flowering. My plan was to start when the smallest plants were 1 foot tall.
A few questions:
- With this minimal lighting, how long will it be until I see any bud growth?
- Where do the buds grow from on the plants?
- Finally, how can I tell if my plants are, God forbid, male?
In the meantime, I think I'll get off my lazy ass and look it up.

Hey Gin, love the grow! Your plants are looking nice and hopefully you'll get some nice smoke out of those ladies. If they are ladies anyways... pray that they are. lol
But I had a question for you. I saw where you said you lived in an apartment. I do too, and I was planning on starting a grow soon (it'll be my first), but I'm not sure how it would pan out while I'm renting? Do you worry about the smell at all, landlords coming in, or anything like that? Just curious! :)

The Indica plant turned out to be a dude:mad: his execution was swift and brutal. I hope the remaining four don't dissapoint me.
I'm probably not the one to ask for advice about handling the smell. I didn't really do much mask it. Also the way my apartment complex is set up I lucked out. Each building has four units side by side. One of my neighbors is never home, and my other neighbor and I are really good friends (we smoke and drink together and she's a cut buddy:thumbsup:). Since I work third shift, I'm home during the day so if the landlord or any of the property management crew come in my apartment, I burn an incense or smoke a black n' Mild to cover the weed smell, and watch them very closely.
If I needed to be more covert, I'd probably cut a hole in the ceiling and run a vent tube into the attic.

You can't add lumens!
Hey gin, I would say sorry bout the males, but it looks like you had WAY too much fun desroying them! haha
Just wanted to comment on the lumen discussion. You were correct that lumens are additive. If you have three bulbs that emit 10,000 lumens, then you have 30,000 lumens. Good job adding more lights, your plants are thankful!
Watts, on the other hand, are not additive. Three 100w bulbs are not equal to one 300w bulb. The 300w bulb has a greater light intensity (penetrating power).
About where the buds form.... Those branches that are angled upwards and have new growth (kinda like the top of the plant)... those will form buds. The branches that have big fan leaves, they wont form buds. But they are equally important since the create the energy for the buds.
Good luck with your woman, treat her well!

You're wrong, I can. How do you suspect we all calculate lumens per square foot? You add up the lumens from all your lights and divide by the area of the room.
You're right that if the lumens are coming from multiple lights, you can arrange the lights to hit all parts of the plant, which is nice.

My hanging fixtures are simply Incandescent Clamp Light fixtures ( model number E-245, $6us a piece at walmart ) with the clamp removed. They plug into a standard socket.
Instead of hanging the fixtures by their cord (a big no no) I bought some parachute cord (a few dollars at walmart with a test strenght of around 300 lbs') cut a piece for each fixture and rigged everything to hang from the rod in my closet.
[attachment=o58676] when I tied the knots at the end of the cord, I used figure eight knots since they don't slip.
[attachment=o58677] I also used Levinton twin socket adapters to use two bulbs in each fixture ($1.93us a piece at walmart)

I hope this helps.

I have 6 cfl's in my growroom, I was extremely close to ordering my 400w hps today, but I decided to get a Gig or ram for my laptop instead (I'm tired of it going soooo slow). Everything I'm using can be bought at walmart... come to think of it everything I'm using was purchased at walmart.

Read the following thread, it should answer your questions about transplanting. Stress Less Transplanting by Harddon (http://boards.cannabis.com/showthread.php?t=29705)

1. I have my own place, its a two floor, two bedroom apt. no roomates.
2. As I said earlier in the thread, I'm about 3 weeks into flowering her.
3. For the love of God, DO NOT GROW IN YOUR PARENTS HOUSE UNLESS THEY EXPLICITLY GIVE YOU PERMISSION TO DO SO:mad: . If the police bust you, its your parents ass on the line too, not just yours.
Snail,
I consider myself an extremely laid back person, but it angers me to no end when folks selfishly put others at risk with their actions without informing those they're putting at risk of what's going on.
From what I understand "I didn't know my child was commiting a felony in my home" is not an acceptable answer in court and will not get anyone off the hook legally. Please don't put your parents in that position unless they know full well they're in that position.
Peace, Blessings, and Responsible growing

no i totally understand where you're coming from. but im 22 and pay my mom to rent my basement. and if i was ANY less than 100% positive that this grow was safe than i would not be doing it. And if im not mistaken, in Canada as long as you're over 18 you're parents arent responsible.

My groove is fine. If you feel you grow is safe then do what you do, you're a grown man. good luck.

Ok, so I caved purchased a 400w hps :D. Hopefully it'll be here by Thursday so I can start my lady on the HID for weeks 4-8 and give her sexy ass the lighting she needs :p. Now I just have to figure out how I'm going control the heat in my growroom. I really don't want to cut a hole in the ceiling just so I can vent into the space above my apartment:( . Any suggestions?

Hey gin good job. Your plant really filled out man. As for what strain she is....
There is almost NO POSSIBLE WAY to tell what strain a plant is just by looking at it..It seemed to me a mostly sativa plant from my eyes.
Cant wait to see how she smoked. But for some reason I feel you might have cut her down early, But Im not sure but from the last pic you sent I only seen like 10% of red hairs.. Next time post some pics and ask if you think its ready.
Great job though too bad you had a "pollen fest" lol.. that made me laugh.
