i want to visit Amsterdam extremely bad, but was wondering if anyone here knew the kind of lingual abilities the average person the The Netherlands has with speaking English (American). with only minimal Deutsch knowldege, would i be safe to hop on a plane and go, or do i need to study up?

Don't worry, most will speak english, and your broken German will be fine, just bring a dictionary.
I have traveled to europe four times, and trust me, everyone is extremely helpful.

I think you mean Dutch not Deutsch, which is the German word for German. The native language in the Netherlands is Dutch, but, yes, just hop on a plane, they all speak English, usually very well. Have fun...

English all over Amsterdam. My mother was there over the past weekend and she said it was great apart from the Food. She said it was so laid back that food wasn't top of the agenda. She wasn't there doing what we would be doing, so she says anyway, and reckons that English is spoken more than any other language.

Dutch isn't really neccesary, good to know if you have the ability, but your English will get you through no bother!
