Marijuana Package Mailed Without Address

POSTED: 2:56 pm EST February 24, 2006

MILL VALLEY, Calif. -- A man who allegedly mailed a half-pound of marijuana without an address label on the package was arrested after authorities returned it to its sender.

Steven Coburn, 48, of Mill Valley was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of drug possession for sale and investigators found another 1 1/2 pounds of marijuana worth $10,000 at his home behind Tamalpais High School, said Det. Matt Lethin of the Marin County Major Crimes Task Force.

The private Corte Madera shipping company where Coburn tried to mail the package on Feb. 16 followed company protocol by opening the package to see whether the label was accidentally sealed inside, Lethin said.

"Once they opened it up and saw what was inside, they immediately called law enforcement," Lethin said.

Investigators said they are not sure whether Coburn forgot to affix the address label or it fell off, but it had a return address on it that led to Coburn.

He was booked into Marin County Jail and posted bail. A court date was set for March 8.

Even if it had my address I would deny it, and say someone stuck my address on there and sent it. Either way what a waste of a pound.

I think the biggest load of crap about this is the fact they went out of their way to stress the point of "company Protocall"... The fucken addy was probably removed to legitimize the bust...

They did not have the right to open packages IMO,the package had a return addy, return it,end of story

good thinking, this is probably true. If I were to mail 1 1/2 pound of weed I would quadruple check everything before sending it off.

It was a private shipping company, probably something like a UPS store. They have the right to do whatever they want to your packages.

do they have the right to rip off a shippy addy and say there was never one and than open the package? I mean comon, whats the odds that a package with 1 1/2 pound of weed loosing its addy, I say next time he should just write it on the box with perminent marker and place a transparent protective cover over it.

There is NO evidence what so ever to suggest this was the case. The guy was stupid enough to put a real return address on it, it's reasonable to think he was stupid enough to forget an address label. He was probably pretty high if he has that much weed.

It is not "mail" when it is being shipped through a private company, thus, there are no laws that protect it. If a peice of mail is undeliverable for what ever reason the post office will open it too.

Putting your real return address is idiotic.

Fedex & UPS will sometimes invite the police in to sniff the packages with dogs. I lost one that way (about 1 oz) and got a call from a Detective in Los Angeles. "Sir were you expecting a package of marijuana in the mail" is what he asked me. Talk about crapping your pants !!- but nothing came of it. Domestic USPS is different and they cant get into your mail or sniff it without a lot of legal hassle. But if the package falls apart in the mail, not that unusual, then its a different story. Double wrap and seal and put a second address on the inner package so if the shell comes off they can still mail it without having to poke around. Those guys are very very busy and looking to get stuff moving as quickly as possible - they wont take an interest in the package unless they have to or there is something obvious. Make it a smooth easy ride for them and you have now worries

What kind of bud is that thats worth $7000 a pound - must be dank! LOL

i think that whole story is bullshit. This guy was obviously selling MOM and the cops were probably watching him do it for a few weeks...
They just need a cover up story for the bust...

Opening another package is illegal unless a harmful substance is involved such as bio terrorism type stuff. The package should have been sent back unopened to the return address.I know someone at the Post Office...
