Theres a lot of redudancy in English and in most languages and their spellings- that means that the language gives far more information than is strictly necessary to transmit the information. So you can fuck it up a lot and people still understand - this is very useful in spoken language where you may not catch all the words clearly - in writing, IMO its done out of habit.
