not sure if language, not being a phyical thing, can be an invention.... but I don't know, maybe it is. anywhoo I'd say writing. but really there's a lot of essential inventions out there. my personal favorite is music

None of those are physical items.
Anyways, I second the printing Press or the wheel. Possibly the firearm.

"That's easy. Antiseptics. Like the whole sanitation thing. Joseph Lister, 1895. Before antiseptics, there was no sanitation, especially in medicine."
Tee hee. :)
Don't know the quote? Pity.

invent: 1. to create by thought, to make or design (something that did not exist before).

Fuckin' genius beachguy...
Best invention ever? Surely it's just life itself... - not that I want to steal your thread man, and turn it into a theological debate...

Toilet paper. Just think how often we'd need to buy new underwear without it.

I only care about the fish.
So, more specifically sashimi.

See! No cooking required.

Still need fire to temper the steel to spear the fish and slice it ever so gently...but I guess you win Smeagol. :)
Smokey Bear

Yes I do.
Because I would just tie a sharp rock to a stick, and use same sharp rock to slice out sashimi goodness.
Haha.

oh man... I am so sick and tired of God getting the credit for that all the time. You know, it's not like I want to brag or anything, I don't run around saying to people "Do you know who I am? I'm the one who invented fire. yeah, that's right." That's just not me. But all the same, God had no right to take credit...

Nah, not a computer. People lived for thousands of years without one.
I'd say the toothbrush.
Or the condom.
