Reminds me of the time I walked into East L.A. looking for a bar. No one seemed to know what a bar was. As I crossed an intersection, a pick-up truck with three homies in the front seat was waiting at the light. The driver revved the engine just as I stepped in front of the vehicle....so, being a honky...and feeling a bit out of place in tha hood, I figured it was best just not to show any fear. So I approaced the vehicle and asked them if they knew where there was a bar. "a what?" the driver asked. Well, long story short, it turns out back then in the seventies, at least, they didn't call a bar a bar....it was a club. They pointed down the street. Wasn't more than a few minutes later, I was looking down the barrel of a handgun. Two kids...maybe fourteen or fifteen asking me if I was a cop. I was a bit traumatized by the gun...more so when the kid holding it told me to put my hands in the air and turn around. His brown eyes held a combination of hatred and dismay and led back centuries to the eyes of an ancient warrior. Anyhow...the other kid keeps telling this kid not to shoot me. That was awfully nice of him. And as I turned around facing away, as instructed, I thought for sure he was gonna bust a cap in my squash. But, he told me to run. so, I ran....but it's hard to run with your hands in the air and I must have let them down....because the last thing I heard him yell over the wind that was now rushing past my ears was...."get them hans back up in tha air muthafucka!"

...and I thought to myself...'yo, you trippin'? what you doin HERE, in this hood yo?

Well, I didn't exactly get held up. They never did demand money. I think they were convinced I was a cop. I'd just walked up to ask directions to a club, and that kid pulled the piece out and had it inches from my nose before I even finished my sentence. I can understand the confusion. I'm over six feet tall and white...and I wandered into A Hispanic neighborhood at midnight. And I'm not being racial here. It's just the way it is. I've read that at midnight on New Years Eve, it's not safe to stand outside down there because it rains bullets from the sky after the gangs fire their weapons into the air in celebration.
And I was never angry about my experience. More fascinated than anything. Best to experience these things for yourself. Not that I'd feel lucky pushing my luck again.
And me running to the cops wasn't so much for justice to be done...I was pumped full of adrenaline and just had to tell someone about how close I came to death.

I walked in on a rap battle once, It was purely accidental. The club is usually a gothic S&M club but for some reason it was rap battle night. From what I've read here, and in his other posts, I would have to say that friendowl is one of the few people on this board that probably does really know what life in the hood is about. He's probably also one of the few who would'nt piss in his pants the second some shit really did happen.

How do I know? Other than right here I don't think I've ever seen friendowl say that he's hard or a badass. He's made some pretty intelligent posts about what life in his neighborhood is like but never goes out of his way to act like he's some hot shit gangster. Someone who's a real badass knows it, they don't go around telling everybody how bad they are.
