In my opinion, i think you would be better off with the fluoros..Because of the small space the plant would be able to utilize the light much better. But also because of the space you will only be able to grow one or two plants. Try to stay away from tube fluoros. Go for Compact Fluoros. They put out much more lumens.
The MH light will get pretty hot, the fluoros wont. But in order to fully utilize the CF light, you should paint the inside of the grow box flat white, if its not already.
There is a good growing method to keep the plants small yet yield quite high, if you would like to know email me:

in the size area you have, you'll get 50WTs psf, possibly 5 plants, use good ventilation(a couple of 12" fans)induce photoperiod when they are about 6-8"(so they dont outgrow the area)and you'll get a better yeild than you would using any type of fluorecent, why use them if you can get a HID instead,a way better light source....bonbon

A compact fluoro is this:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=20706&item=4316640953&rd=1&ssPageName=WD1V
They are cheap, efficient and use very little energy. They screw right in to a normal light socket. If you decide to use them, buy a couple 150watt clamp on light fixtures. I dont advise buying those ones from e-bay though. Go to HomeDepot and you will be able to find some CF's that produce over 2000 lumens for like 10$ each. You want the warm white light too. You want a minimum of 2000 lumens per light. Wattage means nothing, except what your light fixtures can handle.
But like BonBon said, if you can afford the MH setup n stuff, go for it. Personally i know nothing about the MH setup or the HPS. I know they are better lights though..lol..But flouroescents work pretty good if ya ask me.

If you are planning on closing a door to this small area that you have with the lights on, even the CFs will get the area too warm. I have a space almost exactly the size that you are using, with 6 26w CF's, the door closed, an 18"x1" vent on the bottom, and a bathroom vent fan in a 4"x4" hole at the top, the temp hits 85-90F after about 2 hours or so. If you can really vent the hell out of the space you can use either set up.
