Colo. Group Pushes for Statewide Marijuana Legalization

Having succeeded with Denver voters, a drug-reform group is now gathering signatures to get an item on the statewide ballot in Colorado this fall that would legalize possession of small amounts of marijuana, the Denver Post reported Dec. 29.

The group Safer Alternative for Enjoyable Recreation (SAFER) was behind a successful ballot initiative that compelled the city of Denver to change a city law and make it legal for people over age 21 to possess up to an ounce of marijuana. Possession remains illegal under state and federal law, however.

Denver police and prosecutors continue to arrest and charge people in possession of marijuana under state law. "If the officials in this city don't have the guts to stand up for the individuals they represent, we have no choice but to take up the fight on behalf of those individuals," said SAFER director Mason Tvert.

SAFER must gather 68,000 signatures from registered voters in order to get the marijuana question on the statewide ballot. The group gathered twice that number for its Denver campaign last year.

Yeah, I liked the Nordiques when they had Peter & Anton Stasny.
Still, liked the Penguins better. But I loved those hockey cards that you scratched off their position (from back in the day).

What does hockey have to do with Colorado legalizing?

I severely hope they do. However, we will be going head to head with Washington on this one. They are going to pull out all the stops trying to squash it and with John Walters scummy ass in Denver it means it will be very high profile. This creates a couple problems and a ray of hope.

The first is that the feds will spend massive financial resources and SAFER just doesn't have the funds to meet it. It means a lot of advertising against the measure on TV and radio ads and without countervailing advertising there is a chance that the legalization movement will be smothered.

The other problem is that the feds will use their "civilian" groups, by which I mean all the so-called religious and conservative groups, will actually go door-to-door to beat it. Make no mistake, they could succeed. It would set the movement back by at least a decade if we lose this one. No politition is going to back a losing cause.

The ray of hope is that they are scared. If Colorado legalizes then it will be a massive kick in the balls to Washington and Bush personally. It will mean that other states will feel less constrained to legalize as well. It could domino and eventually Washington will have to face it on a national level as they have consistently failed to do.

I was watching a show from the History Channel about marijuana prohibition. It showed how people in the 30's like Fiarella LaGuardia (New York City mayor) didn't want it illegal either. They have been using the exact same arguements we use here today for the last 60yrs and yet what is the result? Here we sit today with the same problem. In Washington they must laugh about how us stoners can't get our shit together, must be memory loss from the cannabis.

As individuals we can't do anything. However, as part of a group we can. We need to get this issue away from some dirtbag politico's decision and into direct vote. This is what organizations like SAFER, MPP and NORMAL are doing. If we give them our vote and even a small $10-20 donation we can win. If you do nothing then leave the sniveling at home and hang your head in shame as it shows how serious you are not about our mutual cause. Just wait to be arrested and continue to let them feel even more smug and superior over us.

Anyone that hates Bush and the US's policies like I do, as a US citizen, then this is the best revenge. Here, read some more about what prohibition is really about.

Hey there good buddy,
This ol' loser will be at the Playboy Mansion on March 30 attending a party to benefit the Marijuana Policy Project. Perhaps you will be able to make it and we can sit in the Grotto with some Playmates and discuss our , ummm, differences/misunderstanding/war ?
I have been there several times and one of my fav.spots on the grounds to just sit and ponder is the Japanese Koi pond. Maybe we can sit and discuss grammar? and you can teach me how to become a better spellur? lol ;)

Others that will be in attendance are
Bill Maher, Jesse Ventura, Tom Robbins, Former N.M Gov Gary Johnson
Joycelyn Elders, etc etc etc, and some great musical grammy arward winning musical talents.
I hope to see you there.
