Hi. I am new here-- but had a couple of questions.....

I have had horrible migraines for years, since I was 12 or 13 and I am now 31. I have taken so many prescriptions it is unreal. Starting almost 3 weeks ago I had a migraine and it hasn't completely stopped yet. I have been having the auras, numbness in hands and faces, the obvious pain, dizziness, etc.
The doctor started me on Topamax (for seizures but used to treat migraines), then antivert for the dizziness. Then prednisone to see if the steriod boost would stop the headaches, still nothing even works.
On a daily basis I take the Topamax as a preventive and when a migraine occurs (at least several times a week) Maxalt as an abortive, and Vicodin every 4 hours.
Last time I was in the doctor, I told him he has got to get this bout of migraines under control or I would try my own methods. I was quite honest with my doctor and told him I have heard it works and I would try if I could get relief. I live in a state that does not allow use for medicial purposes-- he response was simple "just remember that it is illegal and you will get in trouble if caught"
Does anyone use marijuana to control migraines? Do you smoke when you have a migraine to reduce the pain, daily as a preventative. How does it mix with my daily preventative meds---- what if I have a migraine at work take my maxalt (the abortive) and some vicodins and still have the pain (this is common)-- is it too unwise to smoke when I get home?
Thanks for any info you can give.

I don't think that there are any real clinical trials for the treatment of migraine with marijuana, but it seems that it may indeed help treat migraines, and does not seem to cause them. I've had a serious migraine myself and consequntly will never do some things anymore like drink alcohol for fear of a relapse. Check out PubMed and search for cannabis and migraine. Oh, and I'd just try marijuana by itself at first, to see what its pure effects are.

hello winnieb, i would take your migraines in a minute. i get cluster headaches 10x worst than a migraine. this last for 1-2 months everyday sometimes 3-4 times a day. when you catch it you know it . cluster headaches has been linked to so many suidcides. 1 time i caught a cluster and it hurt so bad it gave me a migraine and after the cluster went away the migraine was still there and didnt really bother me. I use Cafergot , hope that helps. really cant help you on getting a perscription for marijuana. lol

I am more concerned with how it will mix with my prescriptions. I am not looking for a script--- even if I had one it would not mean a thing here- possession is possession when the laws aren't in place for medical usage.
Any ideas how it will mix with my daily preventative meds---- and what if i take a vicodin or two at work with no avail, can i go home and smoke--- how does it mix with the vicodins?
thanks!

I hope you find relief...and you should be able to get relief legally! Maybe soon. I don't know about the pills mixing with herb. Did your Dr. say anything about mixing?

most of the time marijuana dose not interact with the other med's and is good for migraines, I would have some one eles around the first time just in case
you become Paranoid they can talk to you.

I was just saying I hope MJ becomes legal soon...for people such as you and millions of others that could benefit. I won't take pain pills so I rely on MJ for just about all my aches and pains so I do hope it becomes legal soon.:stoned: My Mother used to get migraines so severe we would have to take her to the hospital and get a demerol injection..she suffered and didn't have to..so I feel empathy for you very strongly about your migraines.

Smoking weed with vicodin is no big deal. I do it all the time. Now I'm doing it while on morphine and no different effects.
I can't smoke when I have a headache tho. If I cough it really makes it hurt.:(
Have you tried the imitrex injections?

I don't get migraines, but I've found that the act of smoking does not usually help my headaches. Not sure if this is any help for you, but for me it makes my head ache a little more.

I get really bad migranes too, although I think you've got it worse. The longest mine have lasted for is 24 hours.

I did used MJ to treat my migranes, and it worked very well. It kept me from vomiting, and reduced the sensitivity to light and sound. While it doesn't completely wipe out the pain for me, it made it more of a minor annoyance. I'd highly recomend it.

I have vestibular migranes, which cause dizziness, nausea and make me sensitive to bright lights, any above normal sounds, and fast movments and sometimes any movement. I am only 18, but i found after smoking cannabis that my migranes quit happening. I was a freshman in high school when I started smoking, then like several weeks after I noticed that I quit having the migranes all together, so I quit for like a month (to see if it was indeed the cannabis), so after another trial of smoking for several weeks, I quit again to notice that my migranes returned.... So I started smoking everyday, and I havent had a migrane since. But since I live in a state where it is completely illegal, I recently was arrested for possesion under 20g and paraphanalia (spelling). Now its been about 3 weeks and I have the constany notion of dizziness, so if I move my head the wrong way or if bright lights are flashed at me, or sometimes they just happen. IT SUCKS to know that CANNABIS HELPS ME and the GOVT claims it as illegal. I am not the kinda of person that goes out and does destructive things while on it (I dont believe anyone while on it would but theres always the dumbass that prove me wrong). If anything I could control myself even at work, I never acted any different unless I smoked a lot, I would only be like really quiet or want to go to sleep or get the munchies... Well thats my 2 cents... I BELIEVE MARAJUANA HELPS PEOPLE, just wish others would wake the hell up and realize it too...

Plus you CANT overdose on pot. You would have to smoke 1,500lbs ( you cant even smoke that much in like 20-30yrs, if you do - ur a fiend) in less than 15min (yes this is an actual fact, I research anything before I take anything) Doctors had me on Topamax, and it made me start loosing hair @ age 17! And he left out that tiny fact tell after I was done using the medicine (fucker).... I too have been on like 15 different meds, and found that pot works. I am not saying pot is for you because everyone reacts different to different things... But I know it helped me. Now I am a pot activist, i want people to learn about cannabis, maybe telling people will help get it legalized. Good luck.

if anyone has cluster headaches or tension headaches and is looking for relief.....
it is caused by the sub occipital muscles in the back of the head. they can be torn and build up scar tissue that keeps the muscles in a flexed position. In turn the flexed muscles cut off some of the blood flow to the brian and also irritate the ocipital nerve. symtoms include.... headaches most of the time so bad you just want to go to sleep, wierd popping feelings in the head when you turn it, squishy wierd feelings in the neck, electric shocklike zaps that can be anywhere . and more. I have found out after 3 years of having this and had x-ray, cat scan, mri's that all showed up negative what the problem was. If I would smoke a bowl or something it would make the headache get real bad and it also felt like fluids shifting in the brain like I was having an aneryurism or stroke or something. I found an article on erowid.com about mushrooms curing cluster headaches so I did some more studying. It seems that pharmacuticle cluster headache medicine is based on an indole ring like mushrooms, lsd, and mescaline. However the pharmacy doesnt seem to work as well as mushies. I have been free from the pain for about 2 months now thanks to minzeyecreations.com for supplying me with cheap peruvian torch cactus incense :-).
