Major Drug Bust Involves 13 Crime Agencies
Local police say they busted a major crime ring.
They say they took 20-million dollars worth of marijuana off the streets of Hampton Roads. In all, the U.S. Attorney's Office says over a five year investigation it seized more than 60-thousand pounds of pot and three million dollars.
Seventeen people have been arrested in what police call Operation Weed B Truckin'. More than a dozen local agencies were involved in bust. Police say the criminals bought the marijuana in Mexico, packaged it in Arizona and then used tractor trailer trucks to bring it to Virginia and beyond.
The local agencies that helped catch the crooks will see a cut of the laundered cash. Each department involved received more than fifty thousand dollars. James City County chief of police already says he'll use the money to buy the county's first marine patrol boat.
