(this thread is in response to a question from heathers74)

Heathers and everyone,

why use a vaporizer?

i just bought one to help with the pain from Celiac Disease. it's a better way for several reasons:

the vaporization process causes specific chemicals to be released by tightly regulating the temperature of the air moving slowly by the substance in the chamber. mine can be used for a variety of substances - i'm not sure about some of the others.

--- no smoke means no harm to the lungs... i'd been smoking daily for about 8 months, and my lungs were definitely wearing out... i've been using my vaporizer for 5 days now, and the difference is huge.

--- (as an addition to the last point, i'd say that because many of us use herb for medical purposes, that the benefit to the lungs is HUGE... my immune system is already in overdrive because of my disease... i repeat: if you are using herb for medicinal purposes- GET one of these things...)

--- the effects are way better. did i say way better? good, because they are. absolute tranquility, at least compared to smoking it... very CLEAN high.

--- you only have to use half as much, or less... i think i'm using about a third of what i was.

--- no smells, or at least minimal. when smoking, i used to exhale into and old blankie so that my neighbors wouldn't smell anything. now the light smell is more like blueberries than skunks.

--- the biggest downside is the price of the good manufacturers. i bought a Volcano, which is universally considered the Ferrari of the industry, but it was around 550 dollars...

in no way do i regret this large expense, because i figure it will pay for itself in a year or so, considering how much i use and how much longer this will make it last...

as far as the other brands, i'd do a search on this forum for "vaporizers" thats how i came to pick the Volcano...

i found a lot of great stuff here, mostly in the "recreational" category...

also, for those of you still curious, lets all try to post simple questions with simple answers on this thread... (there are excellent but kinda scientific answers all over this forum category, but i don't understand huge chunks of them)

I don't know why I'd be throwing up after smoking..

It's either cigarettes and weed killing my stomach or an allergic reaction..

But if it's a stomach issue, would a vap help?

Wow.....thanks so much for all the info! It sounds like I must purchase one! Now, I cannot afford the volcano, are the ones around $150 any good or should I just save? Thanks again and have a good one...

thinking about getting one myself, just wish they were easier to do if you happen to be taking a drive on a back road or something :( my little bowl is very handy when it comes to that

TO EVERYONE CONSIDERING BUYING A VAPE just suck it up and save for the volcano as forest said it is like the rolls royce of vapourizers it demolishes any other vape out there and the weed conservation is amazing.

My dealer bought one for over $1000 over the net a long time ago and he still has it and is 100% satisfied with it still and it still works like the day he bought it even though it has like 5 huge dents in it from rough handling

If your simply not going to spend the money on the volcano make sure what ever cheap knock off you get is the convection type(the kind that uses hot air moving over the bud) the ones with a metal bowl that heats up waste weed and are barely a pleasure to smoke like the volcano

punkish,

definitely... at least i would think that you won't get nauseous...

i don't know how connected you are, but if you can try one, even if you have to drive a couple of hours, try one...

I like vaps every now and then, but bongs and J's are my favorite way to smoke

Sorry, for the interruption, but most smokers would like to check this out. I've posted this time and again.

The MAPS-NORML study provides new information on the efficiency of different devices in delivering THC from marijuana to the user.

The percentage of total THC delivered to the user is called the THC transfer rate. The unfiltered joint scored surprisingly well in smoking efficiency, coming in second place with a transfer rate close to 20%. The portable waterpipe did slightly better, and the bong slightly worse. The other devices did notably worse. The vaporizers and electric waterpipe did especially poorly, with transfer rates less than one-third that of the top three devices. Thus, heavy smokers could literally be blowing most of their stash away with bad pipes.

beachguy -

if i'm hearing you right, the vaporizers are not delivering the same amount of THC?

interesting...

i would swear it feels better... and longer...

one thing that is definitely true for every time i've used my volcano:

there is absolutely no anxiety, and this really helps my stomach... (celiac disease)...

and my lungs feel better...

but i don't know all that much about chemistry so i should perhaps be a little more humble when posting something as bold as "why you should use a vaporizer"

i don't know...

i'm not saying that i agree with what you said, its just that i'm willing to admit that even IF i'm getting less THC, the vaporizer would make sense for me regardless.

Yeah, recent tests say that you get three times as much THC through a joint or a bowl.

http://www.maps.org/mmj/vaporizer.html

It's near the bottom, under THC Transfer Rate.

a possible explanation for the different perspectives of beachguy and myself, from the article he quoted:
(findings near the end of the article)

Vaporizers
The vaporizer results appeared more promising, but confusing. The two vaporizers were the only devices to outscore unfiltered joints in terms of raw cannabinoid/tar ratio. The electric hotplate vaporizer did best, with a performance ratio about 25% higher than the unfiltered joint. The hot air gun was just marginally superior, but might have done better had it not been for its water filtration component.

However, the situation was complicated by the fact that the cannabinoids produced by the electric hotplate vaporizer were unusually high in CBN, leaving 30% less THC as a percentage of the total cannabinoids than with the other smoking devices. Since CBN is not psychoactive like THC, recreational users might be expected to consume more smoke to make up for the deficit. (The situation may be different for medical users, who could experience other, medicinal benefits from CBN). For this reason, it seemed advisable to recompute the performance efficiencies of the vaporizers in terms of THC, rather than all cannabinoids. When this was done, the electric hotplate vaporizer turned out to have a lower THC/tar ratio than the unfiltered joint, while the hot air gun was still marginally higher.

(the article link is in beachguy's post)

so, as a medicinal user, i'm looking for not just the THC effects, but the CBN effects...

great article beachguy-!

Hey all,

sorry for the bad info, but i now definitely RETRACT my statement about the efficiency of the Volcano (not sure about other vaporizers)...

-i no longer think that they are more efficient than waterpipes...

thanks,

I got a volcano that was 500, and I got a 1.5 foot water bong straight ROOR look a like for 50, and I have to say I get way higher off a phat bong rip than ANYTHING. But I use the volcano more to live a healty life style...it gets you baked....just in a totally different way you have to get used to..but you just gotta enjoy it....sativas vape better than indicas..you wont get the couchlock with a vaporizer...but you will get a head high that is awesome...so mainly I vape sativas and bong rip my OG kush :)

stoopid beachguy, if you would look further into the ways of bashing a vaporizer.

please listen. The vaporizer that they have used is the Globe Type, VERY CHEAP, VERY CRAPPY Vaporizer. Reason being is that the weed on those types of vapos just sit on a plate that gets hot.. in my style vaporizer, you pack it into a hands free piece.. and you hit it thru the WHIP, drawing hot air through ALL of the bud. not just the bottom part that touches it. So whatever you say, vaporizers deliver more thc than most.

tobacco is a stomach poison.

I bought a volcano and I still prefer to smoke. The volcano really dried out my throat.
