Alright, im still new to smoking, started over thanksgiving break. I'm starting to get good at rolling blunts but i just started trying joints. I got a couple questions about rolling joints.
1. Do you need a filter for joints?
2. What do u use as a filter?
3. Can you just roll up another paper and put it in as the filter?
4. Which end do u twist?!?!
This is my first post but sure wont be my last :-D
thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

i dont roll but i watch people do it and they dont use a filter, they just roll the smoking end up and make sure theres a hole big enough for the smoke and then u rol the other side to keepit shut and burn that off when its time to light up

i always use a filter in my joints just cause it makes a good mouthpiece and saves your lips from getting burnt when your smoking the roach
you can just tear a small piece off the zig zag box that the papers come in, roll it up into a circular tube shape ( no longer than width of pinky finger) and put that at one end of the joint.
once you have rolled the joint twist the end that doesnt have the filter
rolling with a filter is prolly harder but its way better in my opinion
i usually don't use filters in my joints unless they r half an 8th or bigger, and i find that without a filter it is much more efficient cuz then u don't have to worry about taking out the filter before smoking ur roach...on the negative end u might end up with a little bit of bud in ur teeth. u have to make sure to cut up ur weed REALLY fine, make sure there're no lumps/stems in it, i usually go through my pile about 3 times to be sure. when ur rolling, don't mix tobacco in ur joint, makes it harsher and that site's full of shit, weed will burn fine by itself. when rolling, make sure u don't squeeze ur mix too tight in the paper, otherwise it will run/go out. make ur weed into a 'rail' inside the paper, and open the paper to check for high spots/low spots in the mix, level it out, and twist tuck and roll.
have a lighter handy, light and enjoy!

the only point of filters is to keep the bud out of your teeth. so if you dont have a problem with that already, then dont worry about it. otherwise paper works fine, or like ganja said small cardboard works well.
one of the first times i smoked weed my friend showed me how to empty the tobacco out of a cig and make a joint out of it. except he didnt remove the cigarette filter, so most of the thc got stuck in the filter. he meant it as a joke, but i was pissed cause he basically wasted a jays worth of my weed.
nothing to do with your question, but just felt like sharing.

I'd personally recommend just shelling out the ten bucks or whatever for a rolling machine. I remember when I was first starting smoking in high school I could always get the first joint rolled, but after that was finishes let's just say my dexterity wasn't necessarily top notch. The rolling machine takes all the work out and rolls perfect joints everytime, regardless of your state of mind.

No need to get lippy about a little roller, its a preference.
I use part of a note card in mine, and I think it makes them a hell of a lot better, just because they have a nice place to hold them when you get down to the end. Not to mention, I think it looks much more impressive to look at.
Its a personal choice for the filter, but they are a big plus in my books.

Buy a pouch of smoking tobaco and practice with that. Its way cheaper than MJ and lets you learn the basic techniques.
Also, try to be visible when you are practicing your hand rolled cigs. Let people see you and ask questions. That way, if you get caught rolling with MJ you have established reasonable doubt. They will either think its tobaco, or when you deny everything they will be more likely to believe you.

Machine = no skill
Hand rolled = skill
and mine look better than any machine can do

I roll mine by hand too, but sometimes it's just easier to roll the machine and not have to think about what you are doing.
I know that when I am a couple bowls into a session, and I wanna joint, I dont have the motor skills to roll a J by hand.

i hope some people don't get confused with the filter, not like a cigerette filter where it actually does filter, just a thin piece of cardboard rolled up for the smoking end of the joint, should call it a mouth piece.

in response to twisting ends...
it's not nessicary, i only do it when the joints aren't going to be smoked right away, and shit like that. and when i do twist the ends i twist both, right before i light it, i bite both off, like all the paper, kind of hard to explain, but when i do it you only see about ink tube (part inside the pen that actually has the ink in it) worth of green on both sides, which ever side is tightest is the side i light (i'd rather be smoking from the looser end [if there is one] then the tighter end, i like taking huge hits with joints and that's kinda hard to do if you are hitting off a tight end)
