View Full Version : AHHG!!! TRANCE IS NOT TECHNO

I've seen soooo many situations where people call DJ Tiesto, Armin Van Burin, Paul Oakenfold, and similar artists techno and you are almost entirely wrong. There is the biggest fucking difference in the world between TRANCE and TECHNO. Yes they are both subcatagories of electronica but THEY ARE IN NO WAY SIMILAR. Techno is crappy ofton random noise making with a gay sounding bouncy bassline and virtually no melody except for random noise. The synths are ofton very jagged saw waves and usually has no or little filter cutoff.

Trance on the other hand is much more cleaner sounding and actually more melodic with more rounded sounding synths and a bassline closely in sync with the beat. The "arps" are usually filtered with a low pass filter so all the annoying high frequency's are filtered out that get that "screaming" synth that you ofton hear in techno music. So all you get is a smooth arp for teh harmony or melody.

Also another big difference is techno is usually in the upper 150-180 bpm (beats per minute) which is just fucking annoying. Trance is usually anywere between 120-140 bpm i think.

People many times have confused Trance with techno and sometimes they are dumb enough to say there is no difference. I have had even relatives before ask me "what type of music do you listen to again? Techno?" and they are so fucking stupid because i've told them time after time again that my music is trance and there is a big fucking difference between the two.

So those of you on here that cant tell the difference just remember techno is like fuckng random noise and trance is more melodic and no where as primitive. Surely trance music fans on this board can relate to what i'm talkin about this just bugs the hell out of me.

i really hate any electronic music seriously i cant imagine how ppl can listen it hours a day in their mp3 or whatever

but i must say its a good music to dance. but again, im not into techno or raves. i prefer big punk-metal slams!!

and i prefer melodic music with instruments, voices, solos, anything. really electronic music doesnt give me any emotions or nothing special.

but yes techno and trance arent the same, just like rap and hip-hop, punk and commercial punk, classic metal-heavy metal-power metal-death metal, etc etc

i agree techno and trance are way different. i dont listen to techno at all but trance i will on occasion, like when i am shrooming or when i am sober and i just want to hit the highway and drive like a bat outta hell. lol. but besides that all i really have to say is that trance gets me kinda pumped up in a sence so i have to be doing something exciting to listen and enjoy

Yes,people don't go around calling hip-hop and rap the same thing so why do they call trance and techno the same. I've had people say "oh, your listening to techno" when i'm clearly listening to trance. "It's like OMG you retard i wanna fucking strangle you". I don't see how it's even possible to get the two mixed up?

yea i love electronic music! it doesnt really bother me when people get them confused cause i really dont expect them to know any better, i dont listen to rap so i dont know the difference between rap and hip hop.

I usually tell people that i listen to techno thats faster than normal techno, cause if i said i listen to happy hardcore hardcore, gabber, industrial, drum and bass jungle trance psy trance goa trance they would be like.... "OMG REALLY?!!!?! i like DJ sammy!!", and then id have to kill them

yeah electro, drum in bass, progressive trance, goa/psy, funky house, jungle, tech trance and some techno are good, but most people wouldnt know the difference,

bit like the way i wouldnt have a clue about any pop celebrites and shit cause i never watch or listen to it

dude wtf i guess there is no such thing as techno unles you wanna go bang on a bunch of stuff really fast and call it techno.....u guys are gay they sound the same... sure you can go make up subcategories for everything if you want to but there the same thing and some just sound different than others. You could say something like "this song is subhardcore terranian techno because it has 110 bpm and a 400 hz tune" but you will just sound like a retard.

They shuldnt have so many subcategories. Who gives a fuck anyway. If you like how a song sounds, listen to it. If you dont, dont listen to it. There should be like only the big categories like rock, hip hop, jazz, classical, techno, gay bitches who cant sing, etc.. whats the point of breaking all those into other categories? There is none. No one goes and says "hey u wanna go listen to some hardcore classical house rock slash jazzblues slash soulhop slash subterrainian suite today?" hell, no one even says "hey wanna go listen to some rock" they just say a band or radio station god damn

Thanks for clearing that up for me man. I have started refraining from using the term techno several months ago (maybe longer), when I realized that none of what I listen to is actually techno, it is all house, trance, and their different forms. Now I know to tell people who tell me that techno sucks that they simply don't know what they are talking about because I don't ever listen to techno and they've got the wrong perspective on the entire electronica genre.

I do use "electronica" to cover all the genres, though.

I listen to a lot of both drum & bass and trance, and there are some massive differences in the genres; no, they don't sound the same, nor do they (most of the time) sound even remotely similar. That doesn't only go for seasoned listeners, either; any moron can tell the differences between Paul Van Dyk and say.. Goldie.

To those who'd say music shouldn't be classified: even bands/producers/etc who share an exact genre can sound utterly different, let alone all genres under a partciular category sounding the same. I don't like all genres of electronica. Isn't it easier for me to say which specific genre I don't enjoy, and which ones I do? There's a HUGE world of music out there, and without classifications, it would be harder to find artists whom you know for sure you'd enjoy.

I like progressive house, by DJ's such as Anne Savage, Lisa Lashes and also Tidy Boys.

Euphoric DJ's such as Dave Pearce, Tiesto and Mauro Picotto are also good. Hardhouse Extreme by acts like Dougal and Gammar and various other artists.

No real relevance in this post, but just lettin ya know what sort I like.

Thanks IntrepidS for agreeing with me on this. By the way your avatar is the best on this site i think. DJ Tiesto is god almighty himself. :rasta:

For those of you that can't tell the difference and say electronica is "noise" or "shit", I can say with the utter most confidence that you lack any sense in music and all you "give a fuck about" is the "vocals" that are shitty and which belong under the category "gay bitches who cant sing" listed above by someone.

You are musically blind and don't focus on the melody's or basic elements that make up a REAL song like Intro, melody build up, main melody, breakdown, changeup, final breakdown, outro. You are too worried about "gay bitches who cant sing". Vocals are not what should make up a song entirely it should be evenly balanced with instrumentals and beats. That's why Vocal Trance is better than most of the SHIT out there that you musically dead people listen to.

Those of you who can't tell the difference between electronica genres are either not trying or are just plane retarded and musically braindead from a mix of crappy lyrics and shitty as fuck instrumentals.

Go LISTEN to music by Moby and there you will have techno. Listen to Paul Van Dyke or Armin Van Burren or Tiesto and you will have Trance. There is as big of a difference as there is between Rock and Hip-Hop.

No i'm not dissing everyone's music here because it's not electronica i'm just showing how foolish some people really are.

Despite my S/N I don't like trance or techno. I also don't like female vocals unless they're really deep like Alison Moyet (Yazoo) or Annie Lennox (Eurythmics).

My reason for not liking trance is that it all sounds the same (as in the sounds used) and the light female vocals. I don't even know what techno is to be honest!

That doesn't mean I can't appreciate other genres though. I do like a lot of hip-hop even though I prefer early 80's synthpop.

Anyone noticed how some fans of rock and metal CANNOT, under any circumstances, appreciate other music genres. I've noticed it a lot, and believe it to be FACT!

And the "real instrument" argument doesn't work. A real instrument is something you can sit down with and manipulate with your body. Some people would argue that turntables and mixers are real instruments! And if a synthesizer isn't a real instrument because "the sound is electronically produced" then bear that in mind when you see someone smashing a guitar on stage with all the circuits flying out of it. And with tons of electronic effect pedals everywhere I could safely say that most people don't know what a clean electric guitar actually sounds like!

Even though sitting in front of a computer to make music takes talent, I don't regard it as real music because playing real (ahem, physical) instruments (whether they be drums, guitars, keyboards) is actually quite tiring and requires extra elements of skill, co-ordination and timing.

For those of you who like your music heavy, check out this album (http://www.emusic.com/album/10777/10777110.html). The drummer is amazing! Then check out some of my beautiful equipment over at www.keyboardassassin.tk
