View Full Version : Drying the harvest
So I have cut down one of my plants from my first grow. I am in the process of drying it. I have the colas hanging on hangers from the shower rod and the loose buds laying on a screen across the tub in the bathroom.
I cut it down and trimmed it Monday night and kept a fan blowing in the bathroom (not directly on the buds) with the door closed 24 hrs since I hung it. The thermometer/humidity gauge I have says it's 70 degrees and 50% humidity.
I have never dried MJ like this or anyway for that matter but my girlfriend who has seems to think the buds are drying to quick. However the stems still bend, no cracking yet. But the outside of the buds seem "crunchy". Is this OK? They have only been drying for 2 days. How should the buds appear or feel to touch as they dry and how long should it take for them to dry under the conditions I have.
Thanks

No they are drying fine but your humidity is to high. You need to get it down to finish drying them. It's the curing that takes time. Drying them to the point of curing them is 3-5 day's. Unless you have a humidifier that can lower the humidity to 25%. Then it's only 2-3 day's if you trim them first.
After they are dry they still need to cure. You place them in glass jars and keep them in a dark place at room temperature. That can take 3-4 weeks and is how you remove the chlorophyll taste. You need to watch the jars for moisture the first few weeks and open them for about 30 min a day to air them out.
If you think they are to dry you can always add back some moisture by using green leafs from your other plants. I assume you are still growing.

Here is how I read on the internet to process for sweet, smooth, clean burning tomatos...
1. Cut the bud at your desired location. DO NOT CUT OR TRIM AT THIS POINT EXCESS FOILAGE. The leaves still contain saccharides which need to assist in the sustainment of THC production.
2. HANG IN DARKNESS! Do not expose your fresh buds to light anymore than is needed.
3. After two days, carefully, in dim light, spend some time cutting all the fans as close to the stem as possible.
4. Hang in dark 2 more days.
At this point the buds will feel crunchy and dry...but they are not. DOn;t be fooled.
5. Now cut all unwanted stems and place in brown paper bags, loosley, and roll the bag up. Keep in dark.
6. Every day, open the bag and let it air out for about 10 minutes. Re roll it shut. DO this for 5 days.
7. At this time all external moisture is gone and the stem will bend easily...but still be too green to snap.
8. I then place the buds in jars and leave them in darkness. You will have no mold issues at this time. Simply remove the top every other day. Let stand for 5 minutes or so...reseal and redo in 2 days.
The longer you do this the smoother the smoke, the less weed / hay smell and the natural oils will over take the green smell and your tomatos will smell as GOD intended them to.
Many ways to cure...this is just one I read on the net.
Thank you both for the responses.
