View Full Version : Personality vs. Looks

What's more likely to get you to date a guy/girl? Their looks or their personality?
Personally, I'm pretty shallow, so if I meet someone in real life then to begin with unless they're physically attractive, I won't be interested.
Having said that however, I find that especially when watching TV there'll be a character whose personality is so fantastic that I can't help wishing they were real. Okay, so even if he was the most charismatic person around, I still wouldn't sleep with the elephant man (gotta draw a line somewhere) but on the whole, their looks come second to their personality.

HAHA! Thats very funny.
If your in a bar or at a club your attracted to a person because of their looks as you don't know them or what their like. It's different if you already know the person, personallity can change your perception of a friend to someone you may concider dating.

I have to go with looks right now.. If I met a good looking chick, I would want to bang her more than a ugly chick, I also just met..!:)

I thought about it. Briefly. I'd rather date robotic hot-chick than an ugly, female replica of me.

The pound's worth more than the dollar. :smokin:
i think people's personalities make them more or less attractive. i've met guys that i think are really hot at first, but once they start speaking they become uglier and uglier... it also happens the other way around.

i agree. of course, looks are the first thing that attract me, but if they turn out to be a total douche, they get ugly. fast.

a good personality can take someone far. I would much rather be dating a nice somewhat average girl over a bitchy hot one any day. sure the sex might be better, but then after you'd have to go and get her water and a towel or something.
fuck that.

The question:
"What do you look for when deciding to date a woman, looks or personality?"
Well that is a complex question.
Have the parties in question explored all avenues of ventures and mergers prior to the union?
Have we examined all documents involved and prepared the said parties in question for future negotiations? I mean, these are forward looking statements.
Have we prepared said parties invovled for the possibility of future aquistions, mergers, liabilities and penalties detremental to the longterm success of the union?
Can anyone know the risk of such a venture?
If none among us, then who will ever know?

Sometimes when I first meet someone, I'll find them really attractive, then as I get to know them, if I find out they're really stupid or something, I can't think of them as hot anymore, they become ugly to me, it's weird.

personality is most important but really there needs to be something attractive about a person also.Anyways people that i usually find attractive everyone else thinks is ugly so who cares.
As long as the girl is not ugly and has a good personality. Like i dont need a hot girl just and average girl but with a good personality.

In personality I look for a woman who is: Giving, Flexible and trustworthy. She should show hope and a little doubt. A confident woman is attractive. A sense of humor in that she is positive about life and is generally optimistic.
Looks arent that important. Having a positive uplifting spirit overrides looks. As long as she is healthy and takes care of herself thats more important. If she is easy on the eyes and has features I like then that is enough.
Looks sometimes cant carry a conversation let alone a relationship for any amount of time. You cant grow with another person on looks alone.

Definitely personality. I'm not looking for random hook ups, which are the only reason I can see putting looks first. Like most people, I have a lower limit on the looks part, and physical attraction is an important part of a healthy relationship, but I'd rather date a decent looking girl who is smart, funny and in general a good match personality-wise than a fairly uninteresting girl who could be a supermodel.

honestly sometimes personality is more important. but i enjoy a girl that i can take pleasure in showing off. like i am glad we are going to the mall so i can show her off. i guess i am kinda shallow but looks are so important to me. i know this girl, and just a few weeks ago she confessed to me that she has liked me for the last few years. (during highschool) now me being the polite guy that i am i hung out with her i chilled with her three different times and we watched movies cook dinner once and that kinda thing. but honestly i couldnt see myself dating her. her personality is great we get along real well and we know the same people. so we had alot to talk about and it was fun. but she isnt "up-to-par" on how i wwould like to have my girl look.
i really like cute girls, hot girls are great but they usually have so much attention from every guy that i have to be with her 24/7 cause if i wont she will easily find another guy that will. and they usually are pretty self-absorbed. but with a cute girl, they usually have had experience in dating and such and you wont have to sacrafice every waking moment in them. like they usually dont mind if i want to go hang with the guys or shit like that every once in awhile. but they have both good looks and a good personality. imo the best of both worlds.
overall i would love to have a cute girl with a good personality over, a hot girl with shit for a personality or an ugly girl with one hell of a good personality

how about smart, funny, and somewhat good looking? i definitely wouldn't call myself sweet... but i try to hide my intelligence sometimes (isn't that awful?) only people who have classes with me know i'm smart. i feel like being funny is a point against most girls too because we're considered "one of the guys"

That's how my last g/f was. It was really cool to just hang out sometimes, if thats the word. Then I figured out she was a bit of a headcase, so things took a turn to sour town.

wolverines! i was raised in the deuce and now i go to school here :)

From a blind man's view of the sighted world, looks wouldn't matter anyways. I have had many chances of feeling or (seeing) beautiful women. How the texture of their skin felt beneath my fingers, so soft and smooth, and how pleasant their voices sound. If she is both beautiful and inteligent, that's good enough for me.

I would say its not about looks at all. Sure, that's sometimes the initial attraction, but usually the personality is what makes someone attractive or not. So then, they ARE hot to you, and for all the right reasons. :)

looks get you together personality keeps you together
Personally, I'm pretty shallow, so if I meet someone in real life then to begin with unless they're physically attractive, I won't be interested.
If you find someone physically attractive then you already have a subconscious impression of their personality.
Suppose you see a big-screen TV, it looks physically attractive. But you are assuming that it works! If you push the button and nothing happens, it turns to junk.
You're not shallow, you're optimistic. You assume that people have a working personality.

I was doin a search for pictures of sensi(she's so hot) when i came across this thread. All i can say is this topic is a no brainer because 3/4 of women are EXTREMELY picky and choosey about their guys. Even ugly bitches require their guys to be above average most of the time. Not to mention that the women that would be rated 8/10 and up on appearance would only pick pretty boys and anyone who is not hot or above average they act like they don't exist. The American Bitch is only concerned about how there guy looks. They all have high expectations like "he has to be hot", "he has to have a six pack and bulging muscles", "he has to be able to lift 10,000 pounds or something", "he has to be a bad bad boy", "he has to be 6 feet tall", "he has to be popular", "he has to be so tanned that he looks like a mexican", blah blah blah the fucking list goes on and on. All american women are like this except for maybe 25% or less. Women are shallow bitches. There's virtually noooo chance of a dude like me getting a hot whore bitch or even an average girl.

I voted for looks for this reason. Picture the scene your in a club and there's two girls at the bar who have been giving you eyes all night. Now one of them looks like they stepped out of your last wet dream and the other looks like a bulldog chewing a wasp. Who do you approach? Not the ugly bug!
That being said ive been with plenty of pretty girls who turn out to be well, as exciting as finding a lump on your nuts. If you can get the combo, looks and personaltie your onto a good'un! But ya not gonna go and chat up a girl thats been beaten with an ugly stick are ya?
Peace

i definitely have to say personality. however, i am usually drawn to "unique" looking guys anyways. i always fall for the ones who are cute-but-nerdy, or have a really original style, or a different kind of beauty. I find them much more attractive and down-to-earth than the cookie cutter "hot guy". Plus, bonus, they are usually more receptive to my own looks and personality, because i'm not "hot", but i still consider myself an attractive girl, and i know i have a really strong personality too.

I would have to go with personality especially if I was stoned because that's when I need something to entertain my mind or I just space out too much.

Just so happens I know this woman for 3 years... Her personality is great, she even thinks like me,,,"Oh Gawg"...
Her looks will not allow me to open the door,so I guess I am shallow and prefer the looks...

Everyone says I have a hot girlfriend. The reason why I live with her, and have been close to her, for five years is because of her "sweet" personality. Her looks are what attracted me, right off the bat. Behind that sweet personality was a different person than me. She gets tense when I'm angry and, usually, cuts me off to combat, and she thinks I'm getting angry everyday. But, she reads me totally wrong, and when I do get angry, doesn't know how to avoid actually getting me angry by saying something to cut me off to then make me cut her off, getting lost in trying to explain myself, and that gets me angry.
Plus, she's a Virgo and I'm an Aries. I read that that union is "one to avoid".

i'd say both but personality would beat looks, i'd rather be with the average looking girl with heaps of personality than a hot girl with no personality

For me it's a mixture. I do go for looks but if they're fuckin psycho I rather not fuck wit 'em lol. But I have a girl that has gooood looks and a really smooth personality. I feel like God blessed me with her or something, we have soooo much in common lol.

Its a hard one.
Obviously the first thing you notice about someone in their looks, but looks fade, and after a few months, personality definately matters - I've went out with some really nice looking guys, only to find out after a few weeks into the relationship, they're as thick as shit and cant engage in a decent conversation with me and when that happens, you suddenly dont find this person attractve anymore because all you see when you look at them is stupidity.
I hate good looking people that love themselves and walk about with an air of conceit, I mean, what a turnoff. Get over yourself, it doesnt matter how gorgeous you are, if you are conceited, you arent going to get very far.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, if you're looking for a long term relationship, personality is the most important aspect.
If you're looking for a one night stand then I guess it would have to be looks.

Looks are one of those things that you go for on a sexually induced stupor and that artificially keep you happy. I mean some people, sure, may actually be happy with the trophy wife stereotype, I'll admit I've looked now and again, but in the end a winning personality is more beautiful and attractive than anything on this planet. It's indescribable. Hey I won't knock the possibility of there being a good personality in a few of those chicks that everyone knows, you know the one that has every season of sex and the city on dvd, gucci shades, a prada hand bag, but personally I wouldn't waste my time. later. ;)

I said looks because even though I wanted to say personality because I have very high standards when it comes to intellect and character, the first thing I see is a woman's looks; that's why I think people shouldn't harsh on online dating: a lot of sites only let you see pics after you are found to be compatible.

Woah... watch the prejudism man. I can admit that I feel most woman are alike - shallow, stupid, mean, cheating - but I still give (some of) them the benefit of the doubt. Go sit by one of the preppy girls at school. There's about a fifty-fifty chance that they won't completely ignore you... though that's all I can give them...

prejudice, prejudism isn't a word...
eddievanzant
03-12-2006, 05:16 AM
Yes it is. Don't change the subject.
Definitely personality. I'm not looking for random hook ups, which are the only reason I can see putting looks first. Like most people, I have a lower limit on the looks part, and physical attraction is an important part of a healthy relationship, but I'd rather date a decent looking girl who is smart, funny and in general a good match personality-wise than a fairly uninteresting girl who could be a supermodel.
yes
i voted personality, but it really is both, but i couldnt stand being with a bitch, i need someone whos nice, fun to chill with, and then looks.

Yes it is. Don't change the subject.
I changed my mind. I'm taking a neutral stance on the word because even though it sounds like simply another form of the word prejudge, and it is found on large anti-prejudism web-sites, Google does the "did you mean" thing and it isn't found in a certain online dictionary.
I would've edited but it's been more than five minutes. I still stand by the next sentence. What's the point of bringing it up?

it's prejudice you're thinking about and all I said was you were a little shallow for being swayed a certain way in your choice for a partner, I personally think personality is the key factor, although looks are tempting. I thought what that guy said was deplorable.

I looked further into it: the noun form of prejudice is prejudicacy and not prejudism so I retract the statement that prejudism is a word or that I'm neutral on it. You're right, but you still should make sure to read all the posts if you hadn't already. Prejudice was not the word I was looking for. I already knew that word and was looking for it's noun form.

Go set up a thread to argue instead of hijacking this one.
(QUOTE) I said looks because even though I wanted to say personality because I have very high standards when it comes to intellect and character, (QUOTE) You mean she has to be able to communicate in more than grunts and gestures.
Would I be right in guessing you are single.

a noun is a person place or thing, period. But yes prejudicacy would be the state of being prejudice prior to a certain time and it being applied to someone (prepossesive) so I suppose it makes sense in your situation, but prejudice does just as well.
