View Full Version : Cookie cutter life?

So, I've been realizing more and more in the past few months that mine is what one might call a "cookie cutter life". I have a budding career that is paying well. I have a pretty wife. I'm just about to finish my undergraduate degree. I'm 23. I've been in the military. I've gone over seas.
I look to my future and I have to say that it's starting to seem, in a word, boring. I'm starting to question if this "American Dream" I'm following is a farse.
I really want to do something with my life that is productive. Not just on a personal level but also with the community. I want to affect large quantities of people. I want to feel like I'm part of something that is important. When I was in the military I felt that way. Although I don't support bloodshed in order to further political agendas; I felt part of something that was important when I was enlisted. (I got out because of my wife, btw.)
The main theme in all of this isn't that I want back in the military. I just want to have an exciting life that isn't just like another copy from a mold.
Does anyone else ever feel like this? Does anyone have any suggestions? I'll take the slap to the side of the head and a "Shut the fuck up you pussy" if that's all it is. I know I have an easy life. But I'm bored silly.

hmmm take up an exciting hobby such as ATVing, snowmobiling(depending on where you live), you could also take vacations once or twice a year, to different locations. Try things such as meditation, and just keep thinking of things that would make it successful but not boring.

It's the wife. She'll snatch a few of your "interesting hobbies" from ya. It's the job. Lose the job and you'll lose the wife. If you don't believe that, lose the job and live happily ever after.

I've been living with a girl for five years, and I'm starting to want my old life back, where I did the things I liked to do. Don't know what caused me to fall in love with a girl that I've no common ground with, anymore.
Oh, yeah. She used to smoke herb. Used to. :smokin:

Ok so I've actually been thinking of the peace corps for a little while. I don't know how I'd explain that one to the wife. Anyone here ever joined?
You're right man. If I lost my job the wife would probably disapear. My boss could say, "You're fired and we're taking your wife too." haha I admit I was too young to get married. Fortunately i don't have any kids and don't plan to for quite some time. If ever.

That reminds me...
On the radio, they were calling in with the worst Christmas presents.
This one guy's landlord brought him a bottle of wine with an eviction notice taped to it.

I would have said to the landlord here let me make you a sandwich and put in a nice dirty piece of used toiletpaper.

Man, I wouldn't say its a cookie-cutter life, you just need some excitement. Sky diving or base jumping or something like that might help. Just get involved in new things. I guess I would just try things out until it made me happy. I mean for this, that's what you're going for: your happiness. Dont settle, man. Dont settle for something when you know you and your inner self know better things are to come. Dont ever settle.

I think my dad had much the same problem as you - relationship, steady job, and child (me!)... now he goes paragliding in random European countries!
Some ideas:
Get involved in sports.
Take up a new hobby (or more than one).
See about starting your own business.
Volunteer work.
