Hey everyone I am a new grower and I was wondering if I were to use CFL lights (good or bad choice?) in a closet setup how many what I need and at what total wattage?

Also as I keep reading the forums and other guides I'm sort of confused. Does the lighting used need to change at all throughout the different stages of growth?

you should also list how many plants and the size of your space then people can give you a lot better advise ;)

150 watt (42watt) cfls are great for begining growing...
use 3-5 gallon pots..
use a perlite soil mix..
have a fan running in the closet.. nothing strong.. just to keep the air moving..
use 2-3 of these lights and keep them 1-3 inches from your plants..

and now you know

Wow thanks alot Garden Knowm, but when you say to use 3 - 5 gallon pots.. can i use these from day one? I see alot of people use those rockwool cubes to start off. Is there a big difference later on if I were to use one of those or does it not really matter.. because the pots would be much easier to get a hold of and I'm not sure of the price of the cubes.

yes, it is a good idea to start seeds or clones in rockwool cubes or some similiar medium.... if you are going to start in soil, make sure you pour 1/3 cup of water everyday on your seedling for the first 7-10days... you can't risk a seedling drying out... it won't recover...

the soil can dry very quickly and your baby can die.. : (

good luck, by the way if you only grow 1 plant your odds are pretty slim. I mean you can end up with a male. maybe you should aleast try 2 or 3 the odds are a lot better.

I'm not sure about the type of CFL as far as light spectrum goes for that bulb. But do know thats not the watts you want it really watts is 20 not 75. 75 is just the energy saver you cant go by the 2nd number which is the energy saver number. You should go for the higher watt bulbs they have. Just wait for more input to see what people say about the whole CFL thing. Go on turtles thread and ask him I pretty sure he knows alot more about CFLs.

there is a 42 watt/ 150 watt bulb at Home Depot....it outs out 1960 lumens
you should at least get that bulb..

: ) ... you can still use the bulb you bought!!!
: ) ... just add some more!!!
: ) ... kinda like girl friends

i love you

Yea I was afraid it was too weak, thanks for the advice everyone. So pretty much your saying I should get 3 - 4 42w CFL bulbs at 1960 lumens each. Meaning 7840 lumens of light total. Is it alright if the bulbs are soft white or must they be warm?

How tall is your closet? You could go with 4 standard 48" double bulb fluorescent lights ( 8 bulbs total) and hang them vertically. Hang one in each corner of the closet. Each standard cool white bulb puts out about 3200 lumens for a total of about 25,000 lumens. Does that put a little light on the subject for you? I just bought a few sets at Lowe's for $7.97 each and the bulbs are about $3.00 each. you'll end up spending about $60 US and get three times the light...
