How do bowls work?

I may sound like an idiot to most of u out there but i don't understand, i'm very new to this stuff! Please help!

The bowl has a whole in it that allows the smoke to get through to wherever you suck.
If it's a pipe the smoke goes through the whole and through it until it's in your lungs.
A bong has a bowl with a tube that goes inside the bong. It's pretty simple.

A bowl is what you put the weed in to smoke from.. take a pipe for example, the part you put weed in, with the hole at the bottom that's the bowl.
Before coming here, I heard Kid Rock say "smoke a bowl" in one of his songs (prodigal son lol) and was like "how do you smoke out of a bowl?!" lol.
