i get tired of looking for facts on marijuana when i need to freshen up, so i figure a thread made specifically for that reason would be great and here it is.

i'll start.

(try to keep the information based around the health benefits. "i love marijuana" may be a fact, but it isn't supportive in the fight for legalizing marijuana.)

amyotrophic lateral sclerosis-
A chronic, progressive disease marked by gradual degeneration of the nerve cells in the central nervous system that control voluntary muscle movement. The disorder causes muscle weakness and atrophy and usually results in death. Also called Lou Gehrig's disease.

Abstract

Cannabis (marijuana) has been proposed as treatment for a widening spectrum of medical condtions and has many properties that may be applicable to the management of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This study is the first, anonymous survey of persons with ALS regarding the use of cannabis. There were 131 respondents, 13 of whom reported using cannabis in the last 12 months. Although the small number of people with ALS that reported using cannabis limits the interpretation of the survey findings, the results indicate that cannabis may be moderately effective at reducing symptoms of appetite loss, depression, pain, spasticity, and drooling. Cannabis was reported ineffective in reducing difficulties with speech and swallowing, and sexual dysfuction. The longest relief was reported for depression (approximately two to three hours). Key words: pain, palliative care, cannabis, medicinal marijuana, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

[mods, maybe this could be a sticky? just a suggestion - it seems beneficial]

The quick effect of smoking lets people titrate the dose, ingesting roughly the same amount of THC-9 regardless of its concentration (percentage) in the plant.

Cannabis is not physically addictive

No single person's death have been ever related by the use of marijuana, while thousands of person's deaths are directly related by the use of alcohol each year

- Rats given daily doses of THC in a study at the University of Saskatchewan showed significant increase in neuron growth in the hypocamupus. This part of the brain is involved in control over ones emotions, calming down, and long term memory (and in small part, short-term memory).

Experts have long known that the brain has the ability to suspend the pain response in times of injury and great stress, even after traumatic incidents such as gunshot wounds.

Now, a new study in rats suggests marijuana-like neurochemicals called endocannabinoids may be key to this process.

The discovery may lead to a new class of painkillers with fewer side effects than existing pain medications, report researchers at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). Their study appears in the June 23 issue of Nature.

The Munchies
One peculiar phenomenon associated with marijuana use is the increased hunger that users feel, often called the "munchies." Research shows that marijuana increases food enjoyment and the number of times a person eats each day, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Until recently, the munchies were a relative mystery. However, a recent study by Italian scientists may explain what happens to increase appetite in marijuana users. Molecules called endocannabinoids bind with receptors in the brain and activate hunger.

This research indicates that endocannabinoids in the hypothalamus of the brain activate cannabinoid receptors that are responsible for maintaining food intake. The results of the study were published in an April 2001 issue of the scientific journal Nature.

The current study (marijuana promotes brain cell growth) focused on a particular formulation of synthetic cannabinoid known as HU210 -- a compound which (Dr. Xiao) Zhang described as the most powerful cannabinoid in the world.

HU-210 is a synthetic cannabinoid that was discovered around 1988 in the group of Dr Raphael Mechoulam at the Hebrew University. HU-210 is 100 to 800 percent more potent than natural THC Tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC, from Cannabis and has an extended duration of action. HU-210 is the (+)-1,1-dimethylheptyl analog of 7-hydroxy-delta-6-tetrahydrocannabinol. The abbreviation HU stands for Hebrew University.

Tetrahydrocannabivarin, also known as tetrahydrocannabivarol, THCV, or THV, is a psychoactive cannabinoid found in minor amounts in the hemp plant Cannabis sativa. It is an analog of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with the sidechain shortened by two CH2 groups. THCV can be used as a marker compound to differentiate between the consumption of hemp products and synthetic THC (Dronabinol, Marinol).
