You can buy ballast that use interchangeable bulbs, from HPS to MH, or MH to HPS. But you cant use a 400 watt bulb in a 430 watt. you cant put a 600 watt bulb in a 1000 watt ballast, etc etc etc. NEVER put a 1000 watt light in a 600, 430, 400 ballast.
Have fun, be safe, and dont over-water.
If you can find a "friend" with a female plant try to get a clone. There is nothing more disheartening(other than parenting obviously dumb kids) than spending time and money nurturing a seed/plant that turns out to be a male/herm. Here in San Francisco we have several cannabis outlets that sell clones for 5-8 $ a piece. Whats great about that is you can look at the bud at the counter and match it up to the clone you want. :rasta:

i know that hps and mh bulbs are not enter changable , i also know that the buld wattage is for the same wattage ballast.
I also know that on the Eye lighting site that they list the hortilux 400w and the 430w bulbs both for use with an S51 type ballast, which is a 400w hps
Just cant seem to catch the guys in the office.

Just talked to a representitive at Eye Lighting (makers of the Eye Hortilux bulb),They said the 430w Hortilux bulb was designed to operate on a 400w S51 type ballast.Wished i would have got ahold of them sooner, because i already ordered my bulbs. But atleast we know the low down on them now

To confirm this I would visit www.eyehortilux.com and download a .pdf of the bulb skematics before procedding any further. Note that they do manufacture 430 Watt ballasts as well. You have to keep current, wattage and voltage in mind here. Be careful you don't want a bulb exploding in your face as it could injure you severly. I had a fellow grower of mine one time install the proper bulb into the correctly rated ballast but he handled the bulb with his bare hands. The human oil from his hands caused the bulb to burst and cut his face severly and permanatly blinded him in his left eye. Be Careful and don't take anything for granted my freind. Safety First!!!

Thx for the replies guys
I would imagine that 1 would want a fairly effectent S51 ballast to fire one of the 430w bulbs.1 of my concerns was that the bulb would draw to many amps on start up and fry the ignitor in the ballast. And the fact that most electrical fires are caused by low voltage.I wouldn't want to overlaod a ballast.! might want to fire the bulb with a digital ballast or a high quality S51 standard ballast.
As for handling the bulbs.I always clean them with glass cleaner and where a pair of clean gloves or a pair of clean socks on my hands.
It's also important to keep the glass on the reflector clean, because any debris in the hood will draw heat to it and make a hot spot.
Again thx for the replies, Be safe.
