What the hell is this?
i went on wikipedia because when i googled "2012 theory" i got complicated sites that were pretty lame.
On wikipedia, i looked up "2012" and when i went to the month december it listed "december 21" and had three dates.
* 21st - Marks the beginning of the Winter Solstice at 11:11 UTC. [4]
* 21st - End of the twelfth, final baktun in the long count of the Maya calendar and Aztec calendar.
* 21st - Striking planetary formation along the Ecliptic involving 7 planets, the Sun, and a new moon above the Giza pyramid complex (coordinates 29° 58' 33" N 31° 07' 49" E).[5]
What does the whole "2012" theory mean???

yeah
that's what i was thinking
but i read up on it awhile ago and something about jesus reappearing.
Well this is a day that i'm going to mark on my calendar in 2012...
definately
i'll probablly make some tea, it'll be chill as fuck.
any more details besides total obliviation ?
by the way, i know it's just a theory... these things are cool to read about though :-) :)

the aztecs predicted a lot of accurate astronomical events like eclipses and stuff. and they predicted the end of the world would be around dec.21, 2012. i guess it's something to consider but i think it's bull. if they could predict the end of the world why were they so easily influenced and conquered by the spaniards

I don't know, man... there is always the possibility that it could be true. I mean, the Mayans and the Egyptians were extremely good with astronomy and predicted alot of things this way... but then again it's all according to their culture. That has a wide influence on them... so it could be all bull, as well, you're right.

It's certainly no coincidence. Check out Terence McKenna's TimeWave Zero theory ;)

Actually, it was the Mayans, not the Aztecs, and in no way does this day represent the end of the Mayan calendar.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_calendar#End_of_the_world.3F
The turn of the great cycle is conjectured to have been of great significance to the Maya, but does not necessarily mark the end of the world. According to the Popol Vuh, a sacred book of the Maya, they were living in the fourth world. The Popol Vuh describes the first three worlds that the gods failed in making and the creation of the successful fourth world where men were placed. The Maya believed that the fourth world would end in catastrophe and the fifth and final world would be created that would signal the end of mankind.
The last creation ended on a long count of 13.0.0.0.0. Another 13.0.0.0.0 will occur on 21 December 2012, and it has been discussed in many New Age articles and books that this will be the end of this creation or something else entirely. However, the Maya abbreviated their long counts to just the last five vigesimal places. There were an infinitely larger number of units that were usually not shown. When the larger units were shown (notably on a monument from Coba), it is expressed as 13.13.13.13.13.13.13.0.0.0.0, where the larger units are evidently supposed to be 13s in all larger places. In this age we are only approaching 0.0.0.0.0.0.13.0.0.0.0, and the larger places are nowhere near the 13s that would match the end of the last creation.
This is confirmed by a date from Palenque, which projects forward in time to 1.0.0.0.0.0, which will occur on 13 October, 4772. The Classic Period Maya obviously did not believe that the end of this age would occur in 2012. There will be a Baktun ending in 2012, a significant event being the end of a 400 year period, but not the end of the age.
My theory is that we can't predict the future, so I have no clue what's going to happen on that date, but in all likelihood it won't be anything interesting except for the astronomical alignment thing. I'll probably spend the day toking up and laughing at all the people hiding in their bomb shelters.

I've heard that in 2012 (I'm pretty sure it was 2012) a crap load of the planets will align, which would cause some real natural disasters on earth. however I'm not putting my faith in the egyptians or mayans or whoever. mystical as they may seem, they don't have magical psychic powers and what now  . and what about this biblical crap that jesus was supposed to come back and give final judgment and all that in a thousand years? seems a tad bit late.
can I just call those who believe 2012 is judgment day an idiot when the date comes and nothing happens?

2012 is a leap year starting on Sunday of the Gregorian calendar. Several prophecies and legends project this year as when the end of the world or an evolutionary change in human consciousness will occur. - Wikipedia

I don't really expect anything of the sort to happen. It reminds me of all the doomsday prophecies about May 5, 2000, when there was a planetary alignment. There were all sorts of websites predicting that the Earth's magnetic field would not be able to withstand the alignment and the poles would reverse, causing all sorts of catastrophes like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods and so forth. But, as it turns out, the gravitational pull of other planets has an incredibly minute effect on ours, especially when compared to such objects as the Sun and the Moon. That's why, for instance, the tides are determined by the position of the Sun and the Moon, but the other planets' effects on the tides are not measurable. If they can't even manage to cause a slight variation in the tides, it's certain that they won't be able to cause any natural disasters.

Ha I acually had to do this as a homework problem in my ast 2001 class. The tidal effects of all the other planets combined have almost no effect compaired to the sun and moon. You can derive the tidal force from newtons second law: Tidal force=2GMm/r^3.
Compair Jupiter and the Moon (because of it's mass Jupiter will have the greatest tidal effect on the Earth after the Sun)
Jupiter~7.47x10^9
Moon~1.22x10^15
This means that Jupiter has 0.000006 of the tidal effect on the Earth as the moon. The Sun has somthing like 0.26 of the tidal effect as the moon.
I'll have to find my old homework and find out what I acually did. But it's basicly done this way for each planet, then you sum up all the forces.

Ok so mabey the world won't end in Dec. of 2012, but watch out when the 21st rolls around in Dec. of 4772!
That will be fun, I'm gonna load the biggest bowl an- . . . wait, I'll be dead.
Man I always miss out on all the fun stuff. First I wasn't alive for Woodstock, now this. :(

Beachguy in thongs is right. this whole universe is changing phases and 2012 is when it becomes final. the scientists are learning the whole universe is heating but little do they know it is the whole atomic structure that is undergoing changes. humanity has to go to the next phase of being wich is another dimension. they will finally see the true spirituality and everyone will be united. there will be no more need for wars or anything of that nature. but untill then there will be earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, and all kinds of natural destruction in greater and greater force. there will also be a big nuclear war probably by 2010. go here for more info http://www.divinecosmos.com/cms/

I think it??s hilarious, yet disturbing, that these organizations/cults make these predictions centered around the human species. What about the other animals? What makes us better then them? It seems we thrive on some superiority complex where we think we are above nature and not part of it. The Earth is about 4.5 billion years and some think it??s going to end in the next 6 or 7 based on 50 years of data? It seems he??s twisting the facts to create a panic in order to make money.
The Universe is changing, it??s been changing non-stop from the Big-bang (and probably before that but we may never know because nothing we know of today can probe beyond about 14.5 billion years ago.) I don??t know where you??re getting this indication that the atomic structure is changing. The partials that make up protons, neutrons don??t seem to be.
I do hope that humanity does unite, and it probably will be after another nuclear war. This is a shame because it seems no one (except for Japan) has learned what these weapons can do to our planet.
What destroys his entire argument is that he states ??The changes in the Solar System are only the more obvious and physical result of these changes, where the energy of consciousness itself is being upgraded, causing mass evolution to occur.? This is pure pseudoscience. This is not how evolution works. Nor does he talk about the current mass extinction that humans are already causing. If you want an environment for mass evolution to occur, you must first get rid of what??s causing the reverse effect! I quote from Bender of Futurama ??DEATH TO ALL HUMANS!? ?or we could just learn how to lessen our impact.

Theories of apocalypticism and/or spiritual transformation
* December 21 - End of the great cycle of the Maya calendar's Long Count and a 26,000 year planetary cycle in the Aztec calendar, and thus the alleged end of our world (the end of the cycle is dated December 23 by some calculations).
* According to the 1997 book The Bible Code the world will end due to a collision with a meteor, asteroid or comet.
* Interpreted by millennialists as a time when there will be an evolutionary change in human consciousness brought about by a series of world changing events or revelations. Following this period of upheaval they believe we will begin a new 1,000 year cycle in which peace, enlightenment and our environment take priority.
* The Olduvai cliff will begin and permanent blackouts will occur worldwide, according to "The Peak of World Oil Production and the Road To The Olduvai Gorge" by Richard C. Duncan.
* Terence McKenna's Novelty Theory claims that time is a fractal wave of increasing novelty that ends abruptly in 2012.
* Tibetan Monks practicing remote viewing prophecy that terrorism and covert war will bring on political polarization on a global scale. At the moment of weapon deployment divine extra-terrestrials will avert nuclear cataclysm by enlightening the world; heralding a new era of world peace.

It all sounds like positive thinking to me... and that ain't allowed!1
Can someone post a link regarding this "Novelty Theory", cause I think it's crazy acid talk. A fractal? Really, dude?
And maybe the Mayans only calculated dates up to a certain point in time? Maybe they came to some kind of Math paradox which they concluded would be the end? Or something to that effect...

Yeah, but try searching other terms, or phrases, on that site. It comes up with everything, even what's closest alphabetically. Of course, you have to scroll down and switch tabs from the general dictionary/thesaurus to Wikipedia or Columbia, or Idioms, etc.
