When i think of weed i think of some obnoxious plant infesting my garden terrorizing all of my happy plants. Weeds serve no purpose and are an annoyance. They are usually dealt with by being pulled out of the ground by the root and smothered with pesticides.
weed isn't a good term to identify marijuana. weeds aren't good, marijuana is..

I don't really know, but I always thought it had something to do with the fact that it grows relatively easy like a weed. Plus I guess it grows wild in a lot of places, like a weed perhaps? Hmmm

Back in 74 there was a song by Jim Stafford that played several times a day on the radio...and it went somethin' like this a here...
*strums guitar gently*
The name of this song is 'The Wildwood Flower'
Now 'The Wildwood Flower' is an old country classic
It gained a whole new popularity
The song isn't any more popular
But the flower is doin' real good
The wildwood flower grew wild on the farm
And we never knowed what it was called
Some said it was a flower and some said it was weed
I didn't gave it much thought...
One day I was out there talking to my brother
Reached down for a weed to chew on
Things got fuzzy and things got blurry
And then everything was gone
I Didn't know what happened
But I knew it beat the hell out of sniffin' burlap
I come to and my brother was there
And he said, 'What's wrong with your eyes?'
I said, 'I don't know, I was chewing on a weed'
He said, 'Let me give it a try'
We spent the rest of that day and most of that night
Trying to find my brother, Bill
Caught up with him 'bout six o'clock the next mornin'
Naked, swinging on the windmill
He said he flew up there
I had to fly up and get him down
He was about half crazy...
The very next day we picked a bunch of them weeds
And put 'em in the sun to dry
Then we mashed 'em up and we cleaned 'em all
And put 'em in the corncob pipe
Smokin' them wildwood flowers got to be a habit
We didn't see no harm
We thought it was kind of handy
Take a trip and never leave the farm
A big ol' puff on the wildwood weed
Next thing you know we's just wandering behind the little animals
All good things gotta come to an end
And it's the same with the wildwood weed
One day these fellers from Washington come by
And they spied us and they turned white as a sheet
And they dug and they burned
And they burned and they dug
And they killed all our cute little weeds
Then they drove away
We just smiled and waved...
Sittin' there on that sack of seeds
Y'all come back now, ya hear?

Wouldn't it be cool if weed did grow like dandelions or something. It wouldnt really matter if it was illegal or not. Nobody would have to buy it cuz it would already be in their yard! I bet there would be a lot more yellow lawns..heh. People would be proud of it rather than trying to kill it. Id be like, man, how do the Smiths always have such a weedy lawn?? what IS their secret???

What do people call Cannabis "Marijuana?"
It's presumed to be derived from the Virgin Mary (Jane :p), but
What about the origin of the word marijuana? It was deliberately foisted upon the American public by a single FBI agent - Harry J. Anslinger. The FBI was created in order to fight the U.S.A.'s previous war on drugs - the prohibition of alcohol - and when "prohibition" ended many assumed that the FBI would be disbanded. Faced with the possibilty of having to find another job, agent Anslinger decided to whip up a drug scare, and he chose cannabis. The horror stories he told about this herb were completely fictitious and almost entirely racist. As part of his propaganda campaign he deliberately eschewed the English word hemp, the botanical term cannabis (from which we get canvas) and the users' word: muggles. The word he chose was an obscure Mexican slang term (derived from Maria Juana "Mary Jane", originally a brand of cheap cigarettes) in order to exploit the xenophobia of the public. Anslinger succeeded in making marijuana illegal by convincing the public that the plant would render decent white women susceptible to seduction by black men! This poisonous claptrap was widely accepted and even made it across the pond to Britain where it formed the main theme of a book called "Indian Hemp, a Social Menace" (1956).

Calling it a weed is kind of the viewpoint of the farmer who drives around on his Dixon Lawnmower, mowing down everything in sight, including his tomatoes.

It becomes more complicated if you choose to grow indoors. It's not a houseplant and requires a lot of light to flourish. Give it the right conditions and it does the rest itself. It does grow profusely outdoors and here in the midwest it can be found growing along roads and rr tracks all the time. In fact the railroads spray tons of herbicide along their tracks because of MJ and a lot of other weeds as well. A lot of this is a holdover from the WW1 and WW2 years when farmers were paid by the govt to switch their crops over to hemp to provide material for rope, mostly for the Navy. (hence the term "smoking rope") I believe that nylon was developed either late in WW2 or shortly thereafter and a lot of folks believe that growing hemp was outlawed because of the invention of nylon which could only take off in the American market if growing hemp was outlawed and the only way to do that was to associate it with the evil weed cannibis which was only smoked by mobsters, insane teens and of course, black jazz musicians and who cares about them. If I'm not mistaken it was introduced as a psychotropic substance primarily by those same black jazz musicians along with a huge influx of immigrants from Mexico.
Then again, I could be wrong.
HAHA wtf? You should be asking why marijuana is called "pot". Weed is a far better name for it than some stupid long haired hippy calling it "pot". Anyone who is NOT a long haired hippy calls marijuana weed. Weed just sounds better anyway. Just my opinion. Anyone else annoyed when weed is called "pot"???

marijuana = the weed that intoxicates
beachguy in thongs

Why does everyone call marijuana an intoxicant?
It's effects are non-toxic.
in-'-ant is the difference.
Psychoactivity doesn't require intoxicants. Cannabis is a Cannabinoid-receptoricant.

"Drug and Alcohol Review (1994) 13:209-216

The human toxicity of marijuana: a critique of a review by Nahas and Latour.
by Macdonald J. Christie & Greogory B. Chesher
Department of Pharmacology,University of Sydney,New South Wales,Australia
Abstract
A review entitled "The human toxicity of marijuana" was published in 1992
in the Medical Journal of Australia. The authors claimed that the adverse
effects of cannabis use have been trivialised and that the effects are
much more serious than earlier reported. We have made a careful study of this
review and examined the claims made. We compared the claims of the authors
with the information contained in the documents they cited and found that
at least 28 of the 35 citations in this article were cited inaccurately.
Five of these publications were misquoted,or the findings of the study
were not fully reported. Twenty-three citations contained other errors,
leaving only six to eight (two citations could not be traced because of
their obscurity) accurate citations among the 35. All of these inaccuracies
operated in the direction of finding an adverse effect of marijuana.
Introduction
It is not a pleasant task to make an open criticism of a paper by colleagues,
but we feel compelled to do so in the case of a paper published in the Medical
Journal of Australia in 1992.. . etc "
