A scientist who made an important discovery.
He found that the flu virus doesnt die off every year, its always there in our bodies lying dormant. He noted that land populations 30 degrees in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere experience the same flu outbreaks like clockwork each year.
He made an important discovery in that vitamin d levels in the body produced by solar radiation through the skin would plumment in the fall and winter months within most individuals in the populations as the daylight hours became shorter and overcast days more frequent.
He found that 20 minutes of sun on the open body would be the equivelent of 40 glasses of milk to acheive the same vitamin d levels.
He used population isolation methods in which there was no travel to remote island area populations where the flu would be transmitted to the remote islolated population. The isolated population would experience the same effect at the same time of year as the larger mainland populations. He studied flu outbreak patterns through history documents from the last 300 years. In the tropics the flu outbreak would occur during the longest cummulative overcast days or during the rainy season.
It was found that the flu was not transmitted by community to community or house to house or person to person as is now the common belief. Each isolated population would become sick at the same time and only certain individuals within the household would become sick.
It was found that solar radiation which converts to vitamin d in the skin is needed by the immune system to prevent viruses from releasing inflammatory cytokines into the lungs and the vitamin d also was critical in keeping macrophage activity high in destroying the foriegn cells preventing a free radical cascade.
