I voted for J.H.E. but that's just Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell. He also played with the Gypsy Sun & Rainbows (w/out Redding) and The Band of Gypsys (w/out both of them). The Cry of Love tour began with Billy Cox and Buddy Miles. He died with Mitch Mitchell as his drummer.

They all progressed Rock in their own way but I think the Beatles actually opened up the door for Rock bands. They took the rock world from candy music to something beyond.

slayer got there sound from a mix of judas preist, venom, and old beach punk like dick dale, and dead kennedys. unfortunatly i give credit to metallica for shaping what we know as amrican heavy metal. although slayer did perfect it with there raign in blood album. I will say slayer is still the best, because they havn't changed (mutch). still playing balls to the wall earsplitting METAL!
zepplin, and floyd are two of my favorite bands. they helped me learn guitar, and offer some of the best rock music to date. stones are good, and i give them credit for still doing there thang, BUT zepplin in my book kicks WAY more ass.

I voted for the Beatles although they are not my favorite on the list. Grateful Dead is my all time favorite and a good portion of the rest of them I'd prefer to listen to over the Beatles. But since the poll really wasn't for "favorite" but "greatest" I think the Beatles definitely deserve that honor. Sure others may have been better musicians but in terms of pure creative talent the Lennon/McCartney team really can't be beat. Look at a song like Eleanor Rigby. A fantastic "classic rock" song with no guitars, no drums, no bass. Just vocals and a string quartet. Not many bands could have pulled it off and certainly no one would have thought about doing it before the Beatles did. They were not just pioneers in rock, they really re-defined what rock could be.

If you say anybody other than the Beatles, you're wrong. Then Zep, then the Doors. No other band was as versatile with their sound as the Beatles. With "Blackbird", "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away", "Eleanor Rigby", "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Within You, Without You", "Tomorrow Never Knows", etc. you can hear that they never fall into a rut with their sound like virtually every other band.

As good as Floyd was, I think the individual talents and contributions of the four Zep members (especially Page) propels the group to a higher level. Zep moved their sound forward so far and I love their varied sound, from tight blues songs to more mature and experimental music. Still, Floyd is really good.

Gilmour, Waters, Mason and Wright (Barret) Have more individual talent. There are so many flawless Floyd albums, i can't name a bad one. Floyd music is so varied it's ridiculous. Every album is different. They have better songs aswell. To name a few long ones: Shine on you crazy diamond, Echoes
Dogs, Pigs to name a few but i could make a huge post putting every single one of their songs against every single song Zeppelin ever made. I do like Zeppelin, i do feel they are over rated and a lot of people see them as the best and i disagree completely. I'm just defending my fav. band, coz i don't think anyone is better! :D

Limiting my choice to the context of what's already been suggested ('classic rock,' which I mostly find dull), I'd throw in The Velvet Underground who arguably continue to be more influential than some of the others listed.
Lots has happened since the 70's though, no? Whole sub-genres that have left their mark, crossed borders, deconstructed and been reabsorbed... kinda how 'classic rock' itself developed I suppose. I'd bet most of the artists listed would themselves find this thread very narrow in scope.

evryone who ragged on someone else for not voting for a band or not putting other bands up there should be ashamed. there are only ten choices that i can fill. i also said (opinion) which means who do you think or believe to be the greatest rock band. in my opinion i think that those where some of the greatest rock bands who believed in the music, something that Metallica doesnt (reference to their team up with the establishment to shutdown napster) anyone who believes in the music knows that it is more than making money. if metallica really cared about their music than they wouldnt have started the war against the spread of it.

and i just made an advanced intro to the beatles mix for my bf with my brother...three discs. those were just the essential songs (excluding some from hard day's night, since neither of us have that cd). i think that means they were the most inffluential. "Wrong Way"
Annie's 12 years old, in two more she'll be a whore
Nobody ever told her it's the wrong way
Don't be afraid with the quickness you'll get laid
For your family get paid
It's the wrong way
I gave her all that I had to give
I'm gonna make it hard to live
(Big) salty tears running down to her chin
And it ruins up her make-up
I never wanted
A cigarette pressed between her lips
But I'm staring at her tits
It's the wrong way
Strong if I can, but I am only a man
So I take her to the can
It's the wrong way
The only family that she's ever had
Is her seven horny brothers and a drunk-ass dad
He needed money so he put her on the street
Everything was going fine until the day she met me
Happy are you sad, wanna shoot your dad
I'll do anything I can
It's the wrong way
We talk all night, try to make it right
Believe me shit was tight
It was the wrong way
So run away if you wanna stay
Cause I ain't here to make ya, oh no
It's up to you what you really wanna do
Spend some time in America
Dub style!
She'll give you all that she got to give
But I'm gonna make it hard to live
Big salty tears rollin' down to her chin
And it smears up her make-up
I never wanted
So we ran away
And I'm sorry when I say, that straight to this very day
It was the wrong way
She took a hike it don't matter if I like it or not
Because she only wants the wrong way
I gave her all that I had to give
But she still wouldn't take it, oh no
Her two brown eyes are leaking like a sieve
But it still ruins her make-up
I never wanted
you cant listen to that song twice and not sing along

Wow you guys might hate me after this. I really dislike most of those bands. The Beatles is of course the best band of past, present and future.
Dont hit me after this:
Best Band: Beatles
Solo: 1. Lennon 2. Elliott Smith (hides) 3. Doug Martsch (from Built To Spill)
Hip Hop Band: 1. Company Flow 2. NWA 3. ?
Hip Hop Solo: 1. Aesop Rock 2. Atmosphere 3. Easy E
Modern Rock Bands: 1. Built To Spill 2. Bright Eyes (if you consider that a band rather than solo... Conor Oberst does) 3. Pearl Jam
Classic Rock: 1. Beatles 2. Doors 3. Bob Marley and the Wailers

I can honestly say that I've heard 90% of Floyd's songs. And actually they are one of my least favorites. In my opinion (and I'm ok with people thinking I'm wrong), there's a lot of weak lyrics, the production is some of the best out there, but overall what is it about them that really grabs you??? Nothing really does for me. Spaceyness, generic, lots of talent.... little direction. But this is totally just my opinion.
passit420
12-06-2005, 12:25 AM
what albums though. i cannot imagine a single person who can honestly not like their music for what it is. what draws me to them is their ability to grab my soul and send it on a journey. their music is almost hypnotic and well written. Weak lyrics? all of their lyrics have meaning, just read roger waters biography, you will learn. and their sound is far from generic. if you can sa
y this then you must be listening to a different floyd.

Well I think my deal with Zepplin is that there's so much that's stemmed from it, it kinda makes Page and Plant seem generic. I don't care for thier song structure, choice in melodies, seems forced a lot of times. I think the classical influence of Jimmy Page's guitar seems too structured, and less personal. Robert Plant's vocals fills thier style so well, I think that he gets so much respect because of that unknowingly. There's so much better music out there.
I've heard every single Floyd album many times. For I have them all. Yet haven't listened to any of them in over 4 years... tell me why I do that. Music has progressed. Good music may not be in the mainstream anymore but search it out! I think music has became more and more personal... but I agree lacks more and more in the global area.

you have every floyd album, yet you seem to hate them? what the fuck? which albums do you have? i want to know. you have been avoiding this question. also you have listened to all of them many times. why? you obviously dont like them. i know there is good new music out there, i listen to it, but why would i go searching for more when i am more than satisfied with what i listen to. maybe if i ever do get sick of the music i listen to, i will "search it out." but you should show more respect for the bands that your favoirte bands were heavily influenced by and stop trying to play them off to being generic. they were original, something most of the bands today seem to lack.

Well. Ya I'm telling the truth about hearing everything. Although about 7-15% of music that I have (about 400 vinyl, 500 cd's, 100 cassets, 30 gigs) I haven't listened to yet. I could credit ADD. Yes I have... I just stopped listen to them about 4 years ago. So for about 8 years I was an avid fan.

the best rock and roll artist of all time was little richard. no question about it. he created rock and roll. but if i had to pick one from the list, i suppose it would be the doors. they embodied rebellion. they did it right.

I think U2 are one of the greatest rock bands considering the amount of time theyve been successful (20+ years) and the way they continue to evolve their music to suit the newer generations.
