Indoor you can grow a plant as big as you want it before flowering by manipulating the light schedule. 18-24 hours of light and the plant is in grow mode. Lots of leaves and reaching out. You can grow it like this until it is as big/bushy as you like.
Then the lights are cut back to 12 hours and less and it tells the plant to stop growing, and switch to flower mode. Average 60 days later it is done.
So the pics you mention are plant that someone grew out (vegged) till it was huge then switched it to bud. It had been in bud mode for 12 days.
Hope this helps you.
peace.

Hi folks,
I'm no expert but here's basically how it works...weed biology 101
Outdoors, the plants, especially an annual like MJ, get about 14 to 16 hours of light a day from spring until late summer. (this varies depending on your location relative to the equator) When the days start to get shorter,
June21 is solstice and the longest day of the year, it triggers something in the plants that says "hey, days are getting shorter so it must be heading in to fall/winter, better concentrate on getting laid before I die." This effectively redirects the plants energy towards reproduction as opposed to growth and voila, males and females begin to flower. Males usually flower as week or so before females. Indoor growing is basically an attempt to reproduce this process as well as improve on the conditions that cause the growth of flowers. Lights are run about 16hrs a day for the first couple of months of the plants life and are kept as close as possible to the plants to maximize the growth potential. (the theory here is that the bigger and healthier the plants, the more buds it will produce) At a certain point the light is cut back to 12 hrs a day and the nutrients required for flowering are pumped up to produce maximum yield. The one other thing that is done indoors and outdoors as well is to interrupt the process by killing all of the males which forces the females to continue bud production in hopes of getting some pollen. All of that sticky stuff on the buds is designed to catch the pollen as it flys by in the breeze.
Hope that helps a bit.

Well said Bonsaiguy.
I just want to add that marijuana in its vegetation stage has no requirement for rest in order to develop. So, no dark period is needed. The longer you have the lights on the greater growth in less days.
If you plan to grow out for a longer time though, 16 cycle is better than 24 since extended periods of 24 hr light can hinder the ability to accurately control the initiation of flower. You may get a spontaneous cycle change with power interruptions, or you may have difficulty convincing it to start flowering when you want it to.

Why thank you sir. It's amazing what one can find in ones memory when one is not really looking.

I like to read. Ive never actually grown it, Ive never even seen it in person . ;)
I hear even that can make you addicted and go buy crack or meth or heroin.
I love my mom too much to stab her for the change under her seat cushion.

Reading is fundamental....really!!
I've only grown a few plants here and there and not very seriously.
But check out the username...horiculture is horticulture. If it grows in the
dirt the principles are pretty much the same.
And I have also read up on the subject as well. (more than once)
then I got married and had kids and inlaws and shot that idea all to hell.
But wait until the other two move out...woohoo!!
When I am old I shall grow purple. and green and gold and....

so is there any light pattern that would make the buds keep growing bigger and bigger?

Up to a point yes....but when you see the little hairs starting to dry up (I read this on a website somewhere) it's time to harvest for sure. Cannabis is an annual which means it is not genetically predisposed to grow forever like a tree.
You might be able to pick the buds and get the plant to put out another set, but I doubt it would be worth the trouble. If you're in a hurry as opposed to wanting a shitload of weed, try that new Lowryder strain. If it does what they say it's definitely worth the effort. Apparently it moves from seed to flower with no concern for the light cycles and little or no vegatative state and only gets about a foot tall. Less yield per plant but faster turnaround (8-12 weeks from seed to harvest on a 20hr light cycle or something like that) and greater stealth because of the small size. Supposedly it will grow almost anywhere and in most any climate.
