Wish You Where Here isn't too difficult to learn, I'm an average guitarist at best and I can learnt it pretty quickly.

What he said...preferable "Wish You Were Here" Rattling off the little solo part in it is so cool. I was so proud of myself when I first taugh myself that...and its pretty much 3 somewhat easy parts... The into pattern ....The solo ...The chord progression so you can learn it in steps too.

I've always enjoyed the lunatics in the grass myselfBrain Damage! That one shouldn't be too hard.

I'd probably recommend Wish You Were Here for a beginner. Shouldn't be too hard.

Don't knock self taught...I am too and so is my son for the most part.
We're back to that old question again...how do you get to carnegie hall?
practice practice practice...
which I don't do nearly enough of in my old age. but it warms my heart when
the young one plays something I can relate to as opposed to his penchant for
speed/death/metal/whatever he at least still appreciates the old boys like
hendrix and floyd.

i am located close to anoka and not a big clapton fan...always felt he was
a bit overrated but that's just me and it didn't stop me from learning to play the keyboard part of Layla
if you want to learn to play spend some time learning some
Tull...Yes...and never ever forget the Allman Brothers...Duane was
one of the best there ever was.
the kid is learning to be a recording engineer...warms his techie daddies heart

im going to buy bongos and a tambourine with my money...I played for two or three years before I got lessons, and the instructor didn't teach me anything I didn't know. He basically just showed me how to play a bunch of Led Zeppelin songs. Complete waste of money.

P.S.: and the lesson room smelled like body odor.

if the lesson room smells, and he didnt teach you much...then its about the same thing as getting lessons in my room from a heart surgeon?

Bonsai Guy,

Well said!

As for lessions, I guess you use what resources you have the best you can. If the instructor is willing to listen (and the student too), a kind of synergy happens. But you can't replace learning on your own; everybody is self taught to a degree. My best lessons were learned jamming with older, more experienced musicians, and I didn't have to pay them, just keep up with them. That's when I started getting stoned too, come to think of it.

My favorite, Comfortably Numb, has already been mentioned. Just remember the rests are as important as the notes.

I went in the opposite direction. When I was 16, I bought my first guitar and amp for $100 and three free lessons came with it. He taught me "Broon's Bane", the instrumental by Alex Lifeson, on the classical guitar, leading into "The Trees", on Exit...Stage Left by Rush.

I always liked Rush' music and they certainly put out a lot of sound for three guys, but they have written some of the most candy-assed lyrics ever put to paper.

He taught me "Broon's Bane", the instrumental by Alex Lifeson, on the classical guitar, leading into "The Trees", on Exit...Stage Left by Rush.Ah, my first lesson came from a fifteen year old pimply faced friend of mine when I was ten. He taught me "Come As You Are" by Nirvana.. perfect song for a beginner, no? I ran to the library the next day, and picked up the lamest guitar video known to man. Taught me how to tune, and how to play my first six (or so) chords. My second song: Skip To My Loo! The very complex ( ) progression consisted of D and A7. :D

From there, I got my first electric, and taught myself how to do palm muting. I remember sitting in the laundry room every day wondering how the hell they got that crunching sound on Metallica's "And Justice For All".. took me like a week to figure out how to palm mute. Good times. :)
