I currently have 2 400w lamps above my 10 plants, one of which is a grolux lamp with extra blue light and the other is a pure hps, is it fine to use both for veg to keep the plants nice and stubby because this is how i have been doing things thus far. has anyone tried this? i know that plants need blue light for veg really but as long as they have the blue light from the grolux will extra red/yellow matter , or is it more about the ratio's of the different colours? any help with this matter would be much appreciated as i will need to change the setup around quite soon if it is doing harm to the babies.
Many Thanks,
Fallen :smokin:

Mix mode lighting is fine the plants will grow and finish under them with little to no problems. You will not get the stretch you would get if you had vegged them under MH but that's about it.

Enjoy.

Zandor: Are you saying that plants vegged under HPS do not stretch as much during flowering? Just looking for clarification.

Nevermind, I understand what you were saying. The addition of the extra blue light will minimize stretch.

If anything I'd say this is better than having just one light of either type...Plants in nature both veg and flower under the sun which emits all the colours of the spectrum and the plants use what ever they need from whats on offer.. I should think its a different situation with the nutriants ..which must be presented in more precise ratios !

Kind of true.

The color spectrum of the Sun's available light does change with seasons. As well as the proximity of the Sun to the earth. That plays a roll in the cycle of the plant. When growing indoors there are different light spectrums for the plant at different cycle times. When you mix them its fine but not as good as one color but the veg and a different one for the flower. Yes Hortilux bulbs have a mix color spectrum and I do use them my self. But the color spectrum of a multi spectrum bulb is still not as high as the single spectrum bulb by it's self. (Did you get that?)

It sounds confusing but just think of the proper spectrum at the proper time in the cycle of the plant will produce very good results. Mixed medium is more playing an average game, but that's ok to play too. The plant will grow about 30% more on average during the flower period. It normally stops growing the last 30 day's or so and the last week it packs on more trichomes to finish.

Thanks ever so much you guys/Zandor, you have answered my question with a warming degree of inthusiasm i thank you greatly. Wont more yellow in veg give more males if growing from seed? just a thought.

There are a few thoughts on that same topic. Many believe light cycle can produce more females then males. It's not a bad idea at all given the fact the sex is not in the seed or in the DNA so early on every plant is neither M nor F. Sex is determined in the RNA of the plant, (that's why we have hermies, and some female plants can produce male pollen and seeds by them selfâ??s.

Environment plays a very big part in determining the male female ratio. Problem is I'm still researching just how big a role and exactly what role it plays I still need to figure out my self.
